Announcement    Non-US Customers, please note: The United States Postal Service has suspended service to a number of destinations. No timeframe has been given for when service to these locations will resume. I apologize for the inconvenience, and will happily resume sales to these locations once I can actually get a shipment to you! For more information see https://about.usps.com/newsroom/service-alerts/international/welcome.htm

Sign up for my newsletter at https://www.subscribepage.com/ifutzwithfire to get updates about new designs, sales, special events, and even exclusive subscriber-only offers! Newsletter messages are infrequent- at most, once a week. You can also follow IFWF on Facebook, instagram, and twitter @ifutzwithfire.

USPS domestic service has been running a lot better, but delays do still happen. No matter the time of year, if you are buying gifts that need to arrive by a certain date, please shop early! Upgraded services are available and you can view pricing options at checkout. Local in-person pickup/delivery is suspended indefinitely due to ongoing danger from COVID and changes to Etsy policy which penalize sellers for transactions that do not include tracking numbers.

All items from my shop come gift wrapped year round at no extra charge, and ship in sturdy, plain boxes to help ensure they arrive safely. If you include a gift message, it will be hand-written on a card and enclosed with your gift!

Updates

Just added this new garnet and silver filigree pendant, and we’re trying something different: you get to choose your chain option! Have a look and tell me what you think, should I do this with more pendants?

About ifutzwithfire

Sales 572
On Etsy since 2020

I futz with fire.

And silver, and copper, and gemstones, and glass, and beads, and all sorts of other media too. Jewelry has been my main focus for some years now, but I also paint, cross stitch, do fiber arts, woodwork... really I’ll try any kind of making. Other recurring themes in my life include cooking and cats.

I'm a disabled jewelry artist in the Boston area. In addition to silversmithing and enameling I enjoy various beading techniques, working with leather, cooking and baking, and spending as much time as possible snuggling my big tabby cat.

Frequently asked questions
Gift wrapping and packaging

All items will arrive in a sturdy outer shipping box, and inside they'll be in a cardboard gift box wrapped in tissue. They're ready to gift as-is, or add your own additional embellishments. Certain very special pieces will include a more deluxe type of presentation box; this will be noted in relevant listings and shown in photos.

I'm happy to include your custom message with gifts! Include it when you place your order and it will be hand-written on a handmade card and enclosed with the shipment.

COVID

While COVID-19 remains an issue, I am not participating in any in-person shows or markets. Local in-person pickup/delivery is suspended until further notice.

Research has confirmed that touching items or surfaces is not a significant risk for catching or spreading COVID, so my standard hygienic practices remain in place. Items you purchase from me will have been tried on as part of my process to ensure fit and quality control; after doing so I wipe them down with alcohol and give them a final polish before storing them in a designated container.

Custom and personalized orders

I offer custom designs on a limited basis; contact me for availability and more information. Please note that all custom work requires payment before work begins- whether this is partial or full payment will depend on your particular situation. If you want a custom piece by a specific date, contact me as early as possible. This is true year-round but especially during the winter holiday rush (which begins as early as September for artists like me)!

Recycled materials and provenance of stones

The vast majority of the metals I work with are recycled, and I share the habit of most jewelers in that I collect every scrap and shaving, even sawdust, to sell back to the precious metal refiners where they will recycle it again.

As for gemstones, I love buying from independent lapidary artists, but I also use some larger suppliers who serve the jewelry trade, and these suppliers certify their diamonds conflict-free. I am not aware of any ethical concerns regarding any of the stones or suppliers I work with, and if such information did come to light I would act to find a better option immediately. All stones are identified accurately to the best of my ability based on information from the supplier and my own knowledge.

Metal purity, nickel sensitivity, etc

I work with 925 sterling silver, 935 Argentium silver (a patented alloy that melts nicely and resists tarnish), 999 fine silver, and some copper and brass. These are all nickel-free, and the solders I use are cadmium-free (as has been the law in the US for quite some time). While silver itself is unlikely to cause allergic reaction or skin irritation, some people may experience irritation from tarnish or polishing compounds; thorough cleaning may help. Recycling metals is standard in the jewelry trade, so that element of sustainability is built into every piece.

Care instructions

If you don't have a silver polishing cloth, you should get one. They're great, and will keep your jewelry looking great for years. Check my jewelry care section, or if you spend $100+ you’ll receive one free!

I don't advise the use of liquid cleaning solutions- a lot of stones can be damaged or discolored by them. If you really feel the need to, either use a cloth and avoid getting any stones wet, or do a web search on how to safely clean that gemstone. The same goes for ultrasonic cleaning devices- consult the machine’s manual, and do a web search on any stones. All-metal pieces are at lower risk, but be aware that patina may be affected and results may be unpredictable. If you have any doubts, message me and we'll figure it out together.

Shipping & USPS Issues, 2022 Edition

While USPS service has generally been much better in recent months than the crisis state it was in for much of 2020, delays do still happen. As of January most orders appear to be arriving on time, but any time of year if you need something by a specific date, allowing a few extra days is always smart. Shop early!

Unfortunately, once a parcel is surrendered to the carrier, I have absolutely no control. Packages are insured for their actual value & if a claim needs to be made, please contact me. I will work with you to get the best resolution possible from USPS. I cannot refund orders that are lost by USPS and not reimbursed by USPS. If you wish to use a different shipping carrier (UPS, Fedex, etc) please contact me and I'll look into it.

Customs declaration "gift" designation, EU Tariffs, VAT

Falsely marking merchandise as a gift on a customs declaration is against the law, and fines can be enormous- enough to destroy a small business. I do not falsify these official documents. I reserve the right to cancel orders if such a request is made.

VAT is collected by Etsy during the checkout process on eligible orders. I have no involvement or control in this.

I’m happily still serving clients in the EU! Etsy has tools that help me find the right codes, so your order should come through customs just fine. If an issue should occur, let me know and we’ll figure it out together. Tariffs are collected by the destination country and are the sole responsibility of the buyer. I have absolutely no involvement in or control over them.

Processing & Shipping Times

I am currently shipping first-class orders out once per week, generally on Wednesdays (but sometimes shifted to Tuesdays if I have another obligation such as an appointment that can't be avoided). This allows me to devote an entire day to getting each order prepared, packaged, and dispatched with the highest possible degree of care and accuracy. It also helps to build a less physically demanding day into my schedule to help keep me healthy and creating for many years to come.

Orders traveling by an expedited service (USPS Priority Mail or above, or any other carrier) will be dispatched next business day. Anytime you need a shipment to arrive by a specific date, I highly recommend upgraded service- and please let me know too!
