The Poetic & Esoteric Essence of Glass Gourd (Bottle Art) & Mystic Giftmaking

It all began with the two bottles in particular. In 2014, I was trying my hand at handmade earrings, and was preparing for a Kwanzaa tradeshow when I decided to use a painted bottle as an eclectic display for my earring design. A patron ended up buying the earrings, and the bottle....hmmm.

Another night, I was at one of my Queen Mother Art Mentor's houses, and I was going on a rant, while stippling paint on a bottle. After a while, I asked if she was even listening to me, and she looked down into my hands. "There is a million dollars in your hand...." she replied. I looked down too, to see what she saw. It was another beautifully painted bottle. I took twenty bottles home from the wine bar I had working at, painted them, and took them to a Kwanzaa tradeshow...I came back with six. The rest is herstory!

Artist’s Statement:
My oratory art creations are as fragments of truth, color, darkness and light, washed in windsongs of ethereality. When combined, they create the mosaic of my cosmic soul, and reflections of the worlds I've known ... in vivid detail. They are an extension of my work as a diviner, speaking the volumes that my inkwell and oratory tongue cannot. Their hues carry prayers of healing, images of my spiritual visions and dreams, and whisper secrets from my archives of life experience.

Before the use of modern doctors and medicine, people would seek out the help of the person in the village thought to hold the secrets to curing spiritual and physical ailments. They were regarded as medicine men or women. The remedies they rendered were believed to be potions, presumed so because of their mystical properties of healing, coming in all sorts of intriguing bottles with exotic writing and artwork. Mythological literature speaks much of this, and many of these ancient practices are used today. Many of my bottle paintings have captured this aesthetic, only this time, the medicine is in the visual. I recycle bottles as canvases out of love for Mother Earth to recycle, and to give each painting, no matter what it may be, a touch of the Divine Masculine and Feminine balance.
