Tess Wakeling - Handmade Paper Lighting and Art for Interiors
My work explores pattern, repetition, mark-making and surface design. I manipulate paper using my own paper-cut methods to create geometric patterns that have depth and texture when lit. My lampshades are all designed and made by me in my studio in Frome, Somerset. All the patterns are chosen carefully to work with my process and each one is drawn out and cut by hand. I peel away sections of the paper to let the light through, creating a shaded effect and ensuring that no two lampshades will ever be the same. It is this uniquely handmade look that a machine just couldn't produce and which softens the lines of the geometric patterns. All my lampshades are finished with a lot of care and attention to detail, and at the end of the making I love the magic of switching on the lightbulb and seeing the design illuminated.
My inspiration comes from many sources, but at the core is a love of pattern and designs that work in harmony. Whether its the balance of geometry in nature, a traditional Japanese textile or the tessellating pattern used in Islamic architecture, my eyes are drawn to the decorative elements in our world. I enjoy using light as an element in my work, and see the drum lampshade as a blank canvas. My work adds pattern and texture to a space, using light and shadow in intricate, handmade design.
In December 2014 I was selected for the Craft Council's prestigious Hothouse 5 programme which helps emerging makers to grow their business. Next I will be exhibiting in Etsy's pop-up shop 'Four Corners of Craft' during the London Design Festival in September 2015.
