About

Loving what I do...

I have loved sculpture since I was in pre-school. I was always fascinated with play-doh and silly putty (and still am). The inspiration for my art comes from the nature that surrounds me, whether it's the lush mountains of Colorado or the relaxing beaches of Florida. I create using many different materials depending on how the mood strikes. I tend to do my best work when I mix things up, making a sculpture here, a painting there, a dog costume over there....it keeps it interesting and fresh.

The illuminary light sculptures began in 2002 when I suddenly had the urge to make a light. I started piecing together shapes of handmade papers and attached them to sticks with a bulb at the bottom. It was a bit of a scraggly thing but it actually looked beautiful. I didn't make another light until 2006 after going though a low point when my mom was in a near fatal car accident. I had spent months watching her on life support and after that time of darkness I needed to flood my life with light. The current form of the illuminaries took shape and were more beautiful and peaceful than I ever could have imagined. I discovered that using rope lights provided another level of depth to the sculptures, and hanging them on the wall created a very unique form of art that I had never seen before. During the time at the hospital with my mom, I wondered why I was hesitating to share my art with the world and I realized I had nothing to lose because life is short. I started entering art shows and displaying and selling my work. The response was so encouraging that I knew I had found a good thing.

I also have a love of animals, which led to a degree in Zoology. In order to best combine my two passions, I donate a portion of all sales to local animal rescues. I like to make costumes for my two small dogs to wear to events so we can help raise awareness for how wonderful rescue animals are. When I say I make costumes, I don't mean I sew a dress or buy from a store. I actually sculpt the costumes. This year one of my dogs was a chuck wagon that I made from scratch, and the other had a cowboy on her back and some cattle out front of her so he could rope them. It makes people laugh and that is the ultimate goal, bringing joy to others.

I enjoy the challenge of incorporating new ideas into a sculpture. This year I started building illuminaries with free standing driftwood. I have a few ideas up my sleeve that are sure to be gorgeous, so keep checking back.
