About

I Have Always Been Different

I still remember when I was little, I came to my Mom upset about something, and I said 'Mom I want to be normal' and she said 'Normal!? Why would anyone want to be normal!?' Ha ha. I will always remember this, because she didn't say I was weird, or strange, or even say that being different was awesome, and I should be proud, but her utter confusion at the prospect of trying to be normal just diffused my remorse and gave me a new way of looking at myself and the world.

I Love Strange Things was born from my strange, weird, and curious creations. I am a Master Jeweller, and I create a lot of work as a full time jewellery artist. So this is not my 'Mother' Store. This is my shop solely devoted to my weird and wonderful creations that may not appeal to the main stream, but most definitely appeal to the niche weirdos out there like us.

One of my favourite things about 'weirdness' is how it changes what we perceive as scary or strange. I remember being terrified of skulls and skeletons when I was little. I couldn't watch Indiana Jones (or certain scenes), because I was so scared of skeletons. Now as and adult, I am fascinated by them, and love using them in my art. I once read that we are drawn to skulls because we see ourselves in them. It's like looking in a mirror. We are reminded of both how we are different from a skull, because we are alive, and how we are the same as a skull, and will one day be dead, all our lively features vanished. The fact that I was scared of Skulls when I was little, means I was keenly aware of something very important about them, but didn't understand why I was scared of them, I just didn't want to face it. So I strongly believe that looking at, or confronting the things that scare us, can actually change what we are scared of, and make us scared of less and less as we travel through life. I am scared of skulls and skeletons anymore. I like them.

Did I mention I love strange things?

Today I'm in the studio drawing, 3D designing, carving wax, photographing pieces, or I may be packaging orders. If it’s the weekend I'm probably having play dates with friends and adventures with my hubby and our two young boys. Living the Dream!
