Announcement   WHAT IS AN IMAGE KNIT?

An IMAGE KNIT is a knitted poster-size artwork (between 20 x 25 and 25 x 50 inches in size), mounted on a rigid frame and ready to hang on your wall. It can be based on a photo, painting, sketch or graphic design. It can be a portrait, an intriguing original image, or an autostereogram containing a "hidden" picture. Some are pure duotones (containing exactly two colors), while other may include small amounts of a third and even a fourth color.

The Featured Items show photos of several different Image Knit pieces, both close up and at a distance, to give you an idea of their size and overall appearance.

You can think of an Image Knit as a large-scale, textured photographic reproduction. And I can promise you: it's not like anything you've ever seen before.

This is a portrait of my best friend's dog Dot. I purchased it for her and she was instantly in love. We were both shocked and amazed by the attention to detail. This artist is not only extremely talented in creating a near-photographic image, but she captures an essential part of the soul of whomever she knits. I'm beyond impressed with this product. You will not be disappointed by the quality of love and care present in these works.

About

Knitting a new way to see the world

My works are not just pieces of knitting--they are uniquely textured enlargements of images that will catch your eye from across the room again and again. Each artwork is mounted on a custom-sized internal frame handmade from wood and sturdy boxboard. The frame is wrapped in a soft felt backing, and then the knitting is gently stretched and sewn in place by hand, securing it to the frame. A structurally reinforced, water-resistant backing is screwed into place to protect the knitting and prevent any warping. Finally the piece is finished with a knitted edging that protects the piece like its own handmade sweater, a perfect blend of fiber softness and color-coordinated accent. (You can see examples of backing and edging in the photos above.)

Lean in close to your artwork and you'll see a pleasing pattern of knit stitches, not unlike a cozy, colorful afghan...but back away and discover the magic! The knitting becomes a picture of photographic accuracy, but subtly enhanced and shaded to bring out the best in your special subject. (See a close-up view of an Image Knit in the photos above.)

Every piece I make teaches me something; every piece says something real about me, what I see and what I think. I hope you'll let me share my passion about this medium with you!

GENERAL POLICIES

My number one goal is for you to love your Image Knit and be excited to display it and show it off to family and friends.

For non-custom designs, please review the item photographs and product dimensions carefully before ordering, and feel free to ask questions if you need more information. Please allow three to four weeks for non-custom orders to be shipped.

For custom designs, before I start knitting I will send for your approval a digital pattern image that simulates the appearance of the final knitted piece. Note that this is a small image that simulates looking at the finished piece as if from several feet away, and does not accurately represent a close-up view. Note also that the colors you see on your computer monitor, in both photos of completed pieces and digital patterns, may vary slightly from the actual yarn colors in the piece you will receive. As with non-custom items, I am happy to answer any questions you have before you place an order. Please allow four to six weeks for custom orders to be shipped, and a bit longer if more than two colors are used.

Some non-custom designs (such as "Aroma") can be created in custom sizes. See item listings for more information, or email me with questions.

Refund will be provided when I receive the returned item in original condition.

CUSTOM ORDERS

To start the process, click the "Create a Custom Order" button under any listing. This will open a window from which you can send me a message about what you would like me to make for you. From this request I can create a private listing that only you can purchase.

Either with your initial message or soon after, please send one or several photographs of your subject. The ideal photo is close up, well lit, sharp and detailed, and captures the subject’s personality and expression. It is difficult to product a flattering image from photos that are dark and fuzzy! The most successful knitted images are generally tightly focused on the chosen subject, but don’t worry if the best photos of your subject also have unwanted background or other people in them—I can remove these and crop the image for best effect. If you are able to send several photos, I will let you know which one(s) will work best. Please note that I will do a quick check of the suitability of your photos BEFORE you purchase your custom order, but detailed work will not begin until after the order is placed and payment is received.

In my experience knitted images are often most effective if they focus on one subject, whether person or pet. Multiple subjects may be fine if I have a suitable photo to work from. Most finished pieces will be 25 inches (63.5cm) in either width or height, and 30 to 45 inches (76.2 to 114.3 cm) along the other dimension. If your photo has more than one subject, or has unusual proportions, it may require an image somewhat longer or taller than these dimensions. We can discuss the options available for such images, including creating a multi-part or extra-large piece (pricing will be higher), or cropping the image differently.

I prefer to work in two colors but can add a third if it's needed for a particular image. Please be aware that adding a color will usually add to the time required to complete a piece. I will suggest color combinations after seeing your photos, but let me know if you have specific colors in mind. I have a palette of more than 100 yarn colors to work with, but have found that some combinations work much better than others, so please let me advise you as you make your final choice.

Let me know also if you have any stylistic preferences, such as a minimalist, airy look, a traditional darker shaded look, or a daring, clashing color explosion. After studying your photos I will also be able to make suggestions as to what I think will work best, but my goal is a collaborative creation process that will give you the best possible embodiment of the look you want.

As described in my general policies, before I start knitting I will send for your approval a digital pattern image that simulates the appearance of the final knitted piece. As noted above, remember that this will be a small image, and its colors may vary slightly from the yarn colors in the finished piece.

Any photographs you send me of course remain your property; please make sure before sending them that they are photos to which you actually have rights! I retain all rights to the patterns, images and photos of knitted items that I create based on your photographs. Unless specifically agreed otherwise, I retain the right to display, including on the Etsy website, and to use for any business purposes, all the items to which I have retained rights. I will not display your photographs anywhere, for any purpose, unless you specifically grant me permission to do so.
