He estado cosiendo casi continuamente desde que tenía unos 10 años, ¡cuando mi madre me enseñó por primera vez a usar la máquina! Desde entonces he incursionado en muchas otras áreas... ganchillo, pintura, cerámica, abalorios, decoupage, repintado de muebles, pintura de letreros comerciales, papel maché, fabricación de jabón, básicamente lo que me apetezca en ese momento ... pero siempre vuelve a coser.

Allá por los años 80 hice la exposición de artesanía con mi amiga Sue; lo hicimos muy bien, casi tan bien que no pudimos seguir el ritmo. Hicimos espectáculos, fiestas privadas en casas, jornadas de puertas abiertas anuales tanto en su casa como en la mía, e incursionamos en la venta al por mayor. Sin embargo, después de muchos años, los espectáculos se volvieron cada vez más difíciles de encontrar, y los espectáculos de artesanía en general parecían perder popularidad, al menos donde vivimos, por lo que ambos terminamos obteniendo "trabajos reales".

Sin embargo, nunca perdí mi impulso para crear. Eventualmente, cuando mi hijo creció y abrí una sastrería en 2008, gradualmente volví al modo creativo, vendiendo las pocas cosas que tenía tiempo de hacer entre los dobladillos y las cremalleras en mi pequeña tienda. Ya había abierto mi tienda de Etsy, pero en realidad no había suficientes horas en el día para hacer que ambas cosas funcionaran, así que necesitaba centrarme en mi negocio de sastrería para llegar a fin de mes. ¡Pero eso no satisface mi necesidad de creatividad! Así que por mi propia cordura, ahora me estoy enfocando en lo que me hace más feliz y eso es la artesanía.

En mis años de sastrería y reparación de ropa hecha en fábrica, me di cuenta de que gran parte de ella no está hecha para durar. Buenas noticias para el sastre, no tan buenas para el consumidor. Así que lo que me gusta hacer es ofrecer a la gente cosas que se hacen con cuidado, cosas que están destinadas a ser utilizadas durante mucho tiempo.

I've been sewing pretty much continuously since I was about 10, when my mom first taught me to use the machine! Since then I've dabbled in lots of other areas...crochet, painting, ceramics, beading, decoupage, furniture refinishing, commercial sign painting, papier mache, soapmaking, basically whatever strikes my fancy at the time...but it always comes back to sewing.

Back in the 80s I did the craft show thing with my friend Sue; we did really well, almost so well we couldn't keep up. We did shows, private house parties, annual open houses at both her house and mine, and dabbled in wholesale. After many years, though, shows got harder and harder to find, and craft shows in general seemed to fall out of popularity, at least where we live, so both of us ended up getting "real jobs".

I never lost my drive to create, though. Eventually when my son was grown and I opened a tailoring shop in 2008, I gradually got back into the creative mode, selling what few things I had time to make in between the hems and zippers in my little shop. I had already opened my Etsy shop, but in the reality there were not enough hours in the day to make both things work so I needed to focus on my tailoring business to make ends meet. But that doesn't satisfy my need for creativity! So for my own sanity, I am now focusing on what makes me happiest and that is crafting.

In my years of tailoring and mending factory-made clothing, I realized that a lot of it is not made to last. Good news for the tailor, not so good for the consumer. So what I like to do is offer people things that are made with care, things that are meant to be used for a long time.
