About

My journey is textile driven and not fashion per se. I create pieces for the love of the process and for my love textiles.

Artist Statement

I began studying printmaking at the College of Wooster, and fell in love with the process of making repeating patterns and creating layers of design. Around five years ago I began to integrate my love of textiles with printmaking, creating hand-printed textiles using woodcuts, monoprints and screen prints.

In 2013 I launched INDIGO & SNOW my line of hand-dyed apparel and accessories specializing in non-toxic water based fiber reactive dyes, indigo and shibori. I developed a contemporary form of shibori using salvaged cedar to create evocative, organic designs. Shibori is a traditional Japanese technique of color-resist dyeing, involving intricate folds, stitches, clamping and binding the fabric which yields one-of-a-kind designs and patterns.
Connecting my handmade work to my interest in environmental sustainability has been a major part of my business from the start. I have been an organic gardener for over 20 years, majored in Environmental Studies in school, and have long worked with natural materials. In creating functional, beautiful items by hand, I use stones, wood and plants, both foraged and cultivated in our garden. I choose to source organic cotton, sustainable fibers, non-toxic dyes and when possible materials manufactured in the USA. As a designer it not my intent to perpetuate the fast fashion industry, it is neither environmentally sustainable nor is it ethically acceptable. It is my goal to create pieces that are thoughtful and bring intention into the consumption habits of our culture.

I see textiles as a medium to examine and express what it means to be alive in this place in time. I have been an extensive traveler and everywhere in the world I have visited I have been captivated by the textile traditions of that particular place. Textiles tell stories, they are family heirlooms, they are the things we use to cover our bodies and warm our homes, they’re inextricably linked to human history. I have chosen textiles as my way of contributing to our story and history.

Kerry Riley studied apparel design in London and worked under legendary British designer Zandra Rhodes. I chose to partner with Kerry Riley because she specializes in leather and I trust the quality of her work.

  • Tuyet Nguyen

    Bloomington, MN, United States

Tuyet Nguyen is a refugee from Vietnam.I love visiting her home and seeing her ancestor altar surrounded with an abundance of fruit in her living room. I like knowing that her consciousness is sewing the pieces that I have put my energy into dyeing.
