Studio Process ~ Please come along as we follow James (aka Turtle) from the mucky clay, where Turtles like to play… he creates beautiful pieces of wearable art.

James works exclusively with custom blended porcelain clay. The clay is rolled out thin, slightly thicker than pie crust. Jewelry component shapes are cut from the sheet of soft clay using a variety of specialty cutters, found objects, or by tracing around a hand drawn template. James pinches the cut shape with his finger tips to smooth the edges & give it a dome shape. A hole is drilled at the top of many of the piece; this is where the jump ring or ear wire will be added in the final step.

James uses stamps or found objects to impress intricate designs into the soft clay for his pictorial pieces. Chamfered holes are created in the soft clay, these holes will hold Swarovski crystals in the final designs. Once dry, every shape is painstakingly hand sanded to smooth the edges & refine the shape. A certain number of pieces are broken during this stage as thin greenware (dry clay) is very fragile.

Next an underglaze background color is applied to the pictorial designs. At this point the pieces are put into the ceramic kiln and bisque fired which hardens the clay and affixed the background colors. Next James hand paints the design details with multiple colors of underglaze. James’ pictorial designs require an extra step whereby excess underglaze is carefully wiped off the surface, leaving color only in the impressed lines which accentuates the details of the designs. Many of the pieces are edged with multiple layers of underglaze color which accents the design details. The pieces go through a 2nd bisque firing to adhere the design color to the clay.

Clear glaze is then sprayed onto the front of each piece covering the design with an opaque layer; each hole is drilled again to remove glaze which might seal the hole closed. The pieces are fired a 2nd time; during this critical firing, the glaze melts onto the surface at a very high temperature, producing a glass like finish which makes the pieces shiny & extremely durable.

Many ceramic artisans consider pieces to be finished & ready to sell after 1 glaze firing; however James continues to refine many of our pieces by adding 2 more steps to his ceramic process, each requiring hand painting & its own kiln firing.

Mother-of-pearl metallic luster over glaze is hand painted onto each piece with a small brush and the pieces are fired again. The Mother-of-Pearl luster, when applied and fired perfectly, results in a subtle translucent effect of rainbow colors. The original underglaze colors are still visible underneath, but when the piece is tilted back and forth, rainbows dance across the surface. It is impossible to photograph this effect since the piece must be physically tilted back and forth to see the rainbow colors as they interplay with surrounding light sources and the underglaze colors. The effect is quite striking; art fair patrons always ask why they see different colors as they move the item.

Next 22K yellow or white gold luster glaze is carefully applied around the outer edge with a tiny brush to make a “frame” for the artwork. The final firing fuses the metallic trim to the glaze below and completes the ceramic process. With each firing, the piece which started as wet clay, shrinks & becomes more durable. When porcelain is fired multiple times it becomes strong, durable, & will never fade or tarnish; our glazed porcelain components are fired 3 - 5 times.

A group of 400 pieces takes James 5 weeks to complete during the winter non-show season; during show season a group can take up to 12 weeks to complete. Keep in mind that a pair of earrings is considered 1 piece, therefore the actually number of individual items in a group is closer to 600.

At this point many of James’ porcelain “bits”, as we call them, are finished & ready for their custom neck cord or ear wires. The pieces that are designed for the Swarovski crystals will have their crystals double glued into the specially engineered hole.

A custom length black satin neck cord or a rainbow of ribbon cords are available for each pendant. Sterling Silver or Gold-filled ear wires accented with Swarovski crystals or surgical steel posts are used on our earrings to assure comfort & lasting beauty.

When you purchase our designs you are acquiring a miniature piece of original wearable art; as unique & original as you.

Thank you for “visiting” our studio!

Hello & Welcome! Please come in & enjoy our unique product line! Have a question? We'd love to chat.

The story of our name ~ Indigo Turtle Art

In the best-known race of all time ~ the tortoise (aka turtle) won by working hard and staying true to the task at hand. We believe that slow & steady wins the race, like the turtle we have always valued quality over speed. Each item is individually hand-formed & hand-painted, our hope is that our customers will feel the love & attention that goes into every piece when they wear it. Indigo is the color of the night sky which James loves to camp under; this was chosen to the name to give it an artistic flair. The generic term Art allows us to change & adapt our products to fit our customers' needs. In the beginning James sold mostly large decorative pottery. In the 90's sales of the large items slowed down & the sales of jewelry increased, so James focused on expanding his jewelry line. Today, the only thing that remains of his expansive pottery line is the miniature treasure boxes.

Iridescent rainbows of color dance across the surface of many of our unique porcelain items. Shiny, metallic luster watercolor designs adorn the tops of our Treasure boxes. These richly colored hand-painted designs are framed in gleaming 22K yellow or white gold or coordinating underglaze colors, much like a professionally framed piece of fine art. When you purchase our porcelain artwork, you are acquiring a miniature piece of original wearable art. Each piece starts in a bag of raw porcelain clay and is fired 3 - 5 times before it is ready to be completed with your choice of neck cords in a variety of lengths or incorporated into your wire work, bead embroidery or mixed media designs.

James has been creating & selling unique porcelain art throughout the mid-west & Arizona since 1985 years. In June of 2012, James married Carole; Carole felt that more people needed to have the opportunity to experience James' beautiful artwork. She laid the groundwork to achieve that goal by creating a retail space in their studio which she remodeled that year. She started a Facebook page at where the work involved in creating James' art is illustrated in words & pictures in the Studio Process photo album. James & Carole have a loyal following of return customers at their shows, these customers will no longer need to wait 12 months for Indigo Turtle Art to return to their area as they can now shop year-round through the Etsy shop which Carole curates.

The year 2015 celebrated the exciting launch of a new line of unique porcelain cabochon components. These new cabochons will provide wire wrappers, bead weavers & mixed media artists with exciting new focal components for their stunning designs. Custom designs are available, let us turn your creative vision into reality, we'd love to collaborate with you!

Please stop by often to see the exciting hand-crafted additions to our shop!

Thanks for stopping by!
