Announcement   I enjoy working with a mixed media of traditional and innovative textile design techniques on cotton, linen, hemp, wool and silk. I use dye, shibori, screen printing, painting, sewing and piecing to transform the cloth into accessories, soft jewelry, clothing, housewares, art and bags.
All of these textile techniques, including screenprinting, are done by my own hand.

About

Nature my Muse

I was born and raised in Southern Africa where the red dirt, vibrant colours and bold patterns of Africa helped to shape my aesthetics.
I have always relished in the pure wonder of my senses. My memories from childhood are strongly tactile: bare feet on sandy beaches and exploring rocky tide pools, walking in the pushing tide of the ocean picking up shells and maybe the lucky find of blue and white Ming dynasty china washed ashore from old shipwrecks. The feel of my Great Grandmother's 'kaross' animal skin which could produce tiny glass beads from her needlework if I ran my hands through it's softness. Colours too: The brilliant and meaningful bead work of the Xhosa people who lived in the region, the outrageous colours of my mother's garden, bright textiles and trinkets at the Indian Plaza, the deep blue and green changing colours of the ocean where I lived.

Wherever I find myself in the world, be it living or just passing through, it is nature who offers me the greatest source of solace and inspiration. She is my muse. The rich textures and colours found in nature's design can be seen in my dye patterns and screenprinted images of flowers, seeds and leaves, insects and birds, bears and deer. My designs also reflect ecology, how creatures interact with their environment and seasonal changes.

Diversity is another theme which runs through my life and work. You can see this in my use of every kind of natural fabric I can lay my hands on. I have even worked with obscure fibers like yak wool, nettle fiber and tussah (wild) silk. My use of colour is broad though I do tend towards a warm earthy palette. I work with a mixed media of traditional and innovative surface design techniques and construct my art cloth into garments, accessories, jewelry, housewares and art.

Browsing through the items in my shop you will notice a little bit of everything except for my garments which I sell mostly at art fairs, galleries and markets. I welcome your inquiries about garments or custom versions of something you see in my shop.

I am also the designer and maker of Kootsac reusable bulk food bags: http://www.etsy.com/shop/kootsac

Hello and welcome to my shop.
My shop has a focus on textile art and design. I've always used natural fibers because they felt better on my body. I dye, print and paint my designs on cotton, silk, wool, linen and hemp, and then design and construct my textiles into wearable art, accessories, housewares and art.
All of my images are original Inkyspider designs and all surface design techniques, including dyeing, screenprinting, painting and sewing have been done by me.

Additional policies and FAQs
WASHING INSTRUCTIONS:
All of my textiles are fully washable, colourfast and lightfast. I use the highest quality dyes, textile inks and paints which have all been heatset. I recommend washing in warm water and hanging to dry. If you choose to use a dryer be assured that it will not change the dyed or printed designs. I hang all my natural fabrics to dry because I find that the fabric itself will last a lot longer.
I have been selling my tshirts and textiles for almost 20 years and have many repeat customers who are always impressed with the longevity and washability of my textile art.

PACKAGING:
I use recycled packaging as much as possible.

CUSTOM ORDERS ACCEPTED:
(Please send me a convo)

* I can accept orders for cushion covers and pillowcases, tablecloths, napkins, drawstring bags, table runners, wallhangings and will even consider duvet covers.

* I am a clothing designer and will consider custom clothing requests.

* I will consider any item you may have in mind as long as it is textile/fabric related and makes use of my surface design and sewing skills.

* Please bear in mind that all my textiles are quality natural fabrics and all surface design work is hand done by me. This is reflected in the price, but be assured that you will be receiving an original piece of textile art.

* As a textile artist and designer I can hand dye many different colours and can work with you on finding a particular colour which you may be seeking.

* All of my designs are original. I do not copy or buy designs and will therefore not do this for custom orders. I have about 80 original designs, many of which you will not see in my shop. Please ask if you don't see what you want. I may have just the design you're looking for.
