About

The Accidental Quilter

As a young girl and then as a young mother, I watched my Grandma Jones (Maude) sewing at her treadle machine. Yes, even in the 1950's she was still using a treadle machine. My Mother finally purchased a motor and had it converted. She continued to sew on this machine till she passed away. I was able to view many of Grandma's housedresses and aprons in her quilts. She rarely purchased fabric for quilts except to make aprons and housedresses! As an adult, I sewed dresses for my 2 daughters and myself, and always gave my scraps to Grandma. My children loved to look at these quilts and declare.......that's my Easter dress, or my first day of school dress. Around 1975, the fabric store I frequented offered a sampler quilt class. I decided to give it a try. During this period of time hand quilting was the norm. So I took the class and loved it. Put my quilt top away and there it stayed for the next 30 years. Jump ahead to 2009. I retired from my job, spent some time with my oldest daughter in Florida, who after watching great grandma as a child, had the quilting bug. The new millennium brought with it new ideas. She machine pieced and quilted, and was having a blast! She showed me the ropes and boy was I hooked. So there it is folks. That is how I became the "Accidental Quilter", and have a shop named after my beloved Grandma Maude.
