INSECT LAB

About

Since 1999, inspired by science fiction and fact, Insect Lab customizes preserved insect specimens with antique watch parts and mechanical components.

Robot-like insects and insect-like robots are the stuff of science fiction and science fact. Often in science fiction, insects are frequently featured as robotic critters. There are many examples in TV, movies, video games, comic books, even on album covers. From Cronos to The Golden Compass, the insect/robot archetype has been used, re-used and re-imagined countless times. Both biologists and engineers look to insect movement, design and social behavior to inspire new technology and applications. Some of the most advanced aircraft is smaller than a dragonfly, and NASA scientists are making walking rovers and “swarm theory” probes for planetary exploration. Technology is finding that the most efficient design features comes from natural systems. Over time and ironically, this technology closely resembles the musings of science fiction. This hybridization of from both fields, is where Insect Lab borrows from. Insect Lab celebrates these correspondences and contradictions. The work does not intend to function, but playfully and slyly insists that it possibly could.

Thank you for visiting the Insect Lab shop for prints.
Please check out my policies below and contact me with any questions!
Here is a little info about my process:

P R O C E S S I N G
On a weekly basis each Friday, orders will be compiled and set up for production, prints are estimated to be ship ready within 1-2 weeks of order time.

P R I N T I N G
All of the prints are original giclee prints derived from photographs I took of sculptures made by myself for the Insect Lab series.
By printing to order I am able to create a fresh print every time an order is placed on a weekly basis. While this process is time consuming it’s worth it as I can offer you the highest quality prints, custom sizes (in the near future), and it allows me to inspect every single print.

P A C K A G I N G
I ship prints that are 11x14 and smaller, flat, in sturdy stay flat mailers. Your order is signed and carefully packaged in a clear protective cello sleeve and cardboard is added for extra support. (this excludes custom large prints or originals that are too large to ship flat)
