An All-American Girl Focusing on Supporting American Farms
I've always been drawn to expressing myself through art, though not performing arts--I'm a complete klutz. As I tripped through my childhood, I developed a love for crochet and a connection to my family's heritage. I often longed to be with my extended family in Texas spraying the cotton fields or going to the Harvest Festival, though being the daughter of an Air Force fighter pilot, though, we moved often and I lived a very suburban life. As I've grown, the fiber community and lifestyle has given me the opportunity to have a place, a history, a connection to the past.
When my husband and I were preparing to have our third child, we decided it was time for me to leave my career in marketing for something a bit more flexible and part-time. I went to work teaching knitting and crochet at our local yarn shop. This was the turning point for my husband and me to really focus on creating the life we wanted and not just what would be easy for us to fall into.
A few years (and another baby) later, I expanded my interests into dyeing and spinning, and opened Inspiration Fibers. Things snowballed, and soon we found ourselves living in the country with 23 acres of land and a plan to start a fiber farm: our dream come true! Now we have 9 Shetland sheep, three llamas, two Angora goats and an ever-changing number of chickens that make up our farm: Willow Glen Farm.
I never had a single town to call home as a child, but instead, I developed a deep identity as an American, and I'm pretty proud of it. I want the spirit of my cotton-farming, westward-pushing all-American (Texan!) grandparents to survive in this corporate world through me. It's deeply important to me that my business support the small farmers across the country who are continuing to provide a life for their families based on our heritage, hard work and healthy living.
I also have a great passion for teaching and learning. My breed study club that is hosted on the fiber community website, Ravelry, opens for memebership every spring. Members receive wool, information, tools for record-keeping and a lock sample; not to mention, a great deal of fun in the forum.
ALL my fibers come from small American farmers and are processed at a local mini mill.
