About

Not a cyborg bee-keeper.

I got into photography in college when I took an introductory photography class as an elective for my major. It was the only class in which I looked forward to doing the homework. My instructor was impressed by my potential and encouraged me to take a location photography course the next semester. I took the class and then signed up for it again the following semester because I loved it so much.

My location photography instructor invited me to show my work at his gallery and I ended up being the youngest photographer to hold an exhibit there.

Since then I have shown my work in other galleries, worked at a portrait studio, and sold some pieces at boutiques.

In 2010, I started my own website and called it Iron & Honey. Melissa is Greek for “honey bee” and Ferrara is a Latin derivative of ferrum meaning “iron.”

As you can see from my photographs, I am inspired by color, light, patterns and emotions. I love going on photo adventures whether it's an abandoned building or a nature preserve. I'll go to thrift and salvage shops to find interesting props to use in my photographs. Currently, books, bird cages, and lanterns spark my interest, but really anything with great color or unique design will be mine.

Thank you so much for visiting my shop and taking the time to read about what I love to do. If you would like to view more of my work which includes portraiture and photo projects, or if you'd like to read my blog, please visit http://ironhoney.com/.
