Original paintings and prints from the westcoast

Sooke, Canada 1 Sale On Etsy since 2012

Announcement   Nothing inspires like nature. I live in an incredibly beautiful part of the world - the westcoast of Vancouver Island. Home to gigantic, ancient trees, whales, wildlife, surfers and of course treehuggers . I pass a percentage of all sales to environmental groups working here to help protect what is left of our old growth forests.
The purpose of my paintings are my attempt to communicate the mystery and beauty of our planet, hopefully to inspire more appreciation and respect for environment, ourselves and all the creatures we share it with. I am fascinated with the qualities of light, value and the amazing abstract patterns that occur in nature.
At age 10 my father was transferred from Victoria, BC to Ottawa and I had to say goodbye to our beloved old house on Connorton Lane . I literally hugged each of the many large firs and Garry Oaks that were my childhood friends. Since then trees have always been among my best friends.

About

"It is not what you look at that matters, it is what you see" Henry David Thoreau

I paint for several reasons, the first and foremost is the simple joy and happiness I get from it. Nothing compares to the pure sense of accomplishment in completing a painting that 'works'. It makes me so happy! Secondly, and more important, it teaches me to really 'see' and thus appreciate our incredible world and all of its' inhabitants. It is a healthy high that has helped me replace some of the not so healthy choices I had been making. Although it is a daily struggle my art has been a saving grace in my life.
I went back to school as an adult and studied English and Art History at the University of Victoria. I took several studio courses which got me hooked on painting, drawing and printmaking. I graduated with a BFA of the Faculty of Fine Arts. Education is something you never regret, it may not necessarily translate into more money immediately but it is something no one can ever take from you and it enriches your life tenfold. Most importantly It teaches you to learn to learn, also how little you know!
