Issues Gallery: Unique and Affordable Fine and Outsider Art

In 1995 Issa Ibrahim was five years into an indefinite involuntary institutionalization. He painted, he wrote and he sang to pass the time and feel some semblance of freedom. In 1995 Susan Spangenberg found herself in a state hospital following teenage angst that went on a little too long. One week after Valentine’s Day, Susan was haunting the asylum’s activity center and Issa saw her and became intrigued. He followed her into the Library and there began a romance and artistic partnership for the ages. Rebel alumnus of Creedmoor Psychiatric Center’s renown Living Museum, NYC's Fountain House Gallery and ArtLifting, Issa and Susan continue to create and play and love in their own home studio and beyond. They lovingly transformed their rent-subsidized apartment in Queens, N.Y. into a floor to ceiling, life-size storyboard and set piece to their “insanity.” Reclaiming the psychobabble and playfully arranging their names, Iss and Sue, along with their two rescued cats Schizy and Cray Cray, were inspired to form Issues Gallery…a safe space free from locked doors, cages and hatred. “We seek to heal ourselves through the arts and provide hope, while creating a conversation of improvement to mental health concerns worldwide.”

Shop members

  • Issa Ibrahim

    Owner, Maker, Curator

Issa's work is a reflection of a bankrupt culture. By creating “what if” scenarios, infusing loving homage with harsh realities and biting satire, he wishes to say something honest and meaningful about contemporary society and the world we live in.

  • Susan Spangenberg

    Owner, Maker, Muse

Susan believes in the power of transcendence through the arts. Her work is autobiographical, commenting on her experience in the mental health system. Her themes include issues of race, mental health and other areas of social injustice.

  • Schizy the Cat

    Spritual Advisor

Rescued animal Schizy is intuitive and knowing. Since welcoming her into Issues Gallery she has brought good fortune, provided plenty of good soothing vibes and served up litter boxes full of soul.

  • Cray Cray the Cat

    Favorite Son

Rescued animal Cray Cray lives up to his name. He is a constant source of amusement, wonder and inspiration, providing equal measures of unconditional love with hiss and vinegar.
