About

One man's trash upcycled into your perfect treasure.

I started my Etsy shop in 2014 after running a brick and mortar store called It's a Mod, Mod World in New York City's East Village for thirteen years and a store of the same name for two years in my hometown of Buffalo, New York. Now I am focusing all of my attention on selling my handmade creations to you on Etsy! I still make upcycled product box clocks and also unique pop culture acrylic clocks. In addition, I print fun pop cultural images on foam coasters and also produce a full line of decoupaged light switchplate covers. One of a kind vintage planters with cacti and succulents and really cool moss terrariums add to the Mod World mix. And of course, the toaster lamp which was the original concept for the original Mod World back in 1994. Everything starts as one thing and comes out better on the other side after traveling through the Mod World imagination factory. Upcycled, recycled and repurposed. That's what Mod World is.

It's a Mod, Mod World started out in Manhattan's East Village in 1994. I began by recycling cereal boxes into clocks and vintage toasters into toaster lamps. The store was a huge success and became a fixture in the art and retail scene in NYC. I closed the store in 2007 and moved back to Buffalo, in 2012. In 2013, a new Mod World was opened with partners and I gradually began to sell my products online. More products will be added on a daily basis and I hope to replicate the spirit of creativity and innovation that the store was known for. In my mind, anything can be recycled and turned into functional art. Anything goes! Everything inspires me no matter where I am-from thrift stores to roadside finds. Pop culture is inspiring and so cool and I try to inject a little bit of pop culture and whimsy into everything I make. My only requirement is that the product be fun, hopefully functional and most of all, well made. If you have an idea or object that you would like repurposed or upcycled into something creative or more inspired, let me know. Custom orders are totally welcome! Itsamodmodworldshop is all about recycling and repurposing. One person's trash becomes another person's treasure when I get my hands on it.
Note: I am not affiliated with or promote any of the brand names on any of my products. I am simply recycling and upcycling what I find and inspires me. Message me with your ideas at rsmith509 [!at] gmail.com and I guarantee that we can come up with some inspired, one of a kind creations for your special order. Get Mod!
