Mark is the best. Our third piece from him, they are always so excellently made and imbued with the passion he has for repurposed materials. You can look at each part of the bricolage and sense that there was a story here, a history — that what appears as a playful hummingbird actually conveys the many lives involved in its construction. As always, the item was shipped with care and is more beautiful than what you see in the photos. Photos cannot displace holding these pieces in your hand and experiencing the antique textures in full. Always recommend, highly recommend. Thank you, Mark.

At first I thought, ‘oh I can make this myself ‘ I’m so glad I talked myself out of it. This is so beautiful and one of my favorite Etsy purchases ever. It will be the perfect gift for my dads newly remodeled man cave. I love it- excellent construction and beautiful lettering It was packaged very safely and arrived quickly!

Excellent overall shopping experience from delivery to the uniqueness of the product. I almost want to keep it for myself and I’m not a golfer, so I guess I’ll just keep the boyfriend and it’s a win/win. Thanks! :)

Wow! It was such a pleasure working with Mark! He let us know how the process was going, and he provided a video of the finished product! The piece he built was beautiful and exactly what we wanted! I would highly recommend for any wood products you might be looking for, he does a beautiful job!!

I love this and was just what I thought. I was so excited I couldn’t wait until Father’s Day to give it to my husband!
I make one of a kind pieces of furniture, art, and decor from reclaimed wood and found objects in my shop on 3 wooded acres with a creek in Efland, NC
I started building art and furniture from salvaged wood while living in LA in the 1990's. I was inspired by folk artists whose work I had seen in galleries and at flea markets and by the pieces of wood and metal I was salvaging and working with. I was pulled to return to this work and spend more time with it ever since .
After dabbling and occasionally making pieces in my spare time while working professionally as a remodeling contractor, I decided to devote myself full-time to Wood Art in the Spring of 2013.
I took a leap of faith and applied for a space at the Durham Craft Market (a juried market since 2002), and I was accepted! I set up my booth each Saturday and found that people loved what I was making as well as my ethos of using 100% salvaged materials, the older the better.
The majority of the wood used in my work is salvaged from barns and houses that were built in the range of the late 1800s to the 1940s. I clean up the materials and allow their natural aged patina to shine. I do not add paint or do any faux finishing in my shop.
Since starting at the Craft market, I have had a steady stream of custom orders I've been selling pieces at the market and at art and craft shows. Etsy has also been very good to me.
I love my work! I get to go out and salvage materials, play in my country shop and make fun art and artful furnishings, and I get to recycle and reuse and practice historic preservation by cataloging the origin of my materials on my blog.
Owner, Maker, Designer
Mark Cool is a carpenter and artist based in Durham, NC making folk art and furnishings from reclaimed wood and found objects.
All of the items here are made from reclaimed and found materials, with much love. Each one has a story. I write a blog post for everything I make with a description of the item and an accounting of where the materials came from and from what time period.
If you don't see exactly what you're looking for here, but like the style, ask me for a quote for a custom item. I am glad to make an item to your specifications..
