About

Artist Statement, Or: How I'm Learning to Quit Worrying and Love the Process

In the increasingly technological world in which we live, it is important to remain grounded and connected to nature. On any given day, how many hours do we find ourselves staring at an illuminated screen, oblivious to the natural beauty that surrounds us? We’re connected to the outside world, but not the natural world.

I find a sense of comfort in creating something that is so disconnected from the electronic chains by which we’re bound. I enjoy the fluidity of oil paint, the earthliness of clay, and the forgiveness of wax, which translates so seamlessly into bronze. I was overtaken by the pleasant geometry of creating wax succulents during a time of intense family upheaval. I found solace in their calculated arrangements and realized that this sort of natural, sacred geometry was where I felt safe.

I’m drawn to and inspired by the subject matter and textures of ceramicists Lina Cofan, Naomi Blumenthal, and Nuala O’Donovan. Their work is soothing and the subject matter similar to my own. The feeling of calm engulfs me as I create something so organic, and I feel at peace again each time I admire the final product.

My best work is created in times where I feel I am losing control, so I counteract that by executing the utmost control in their production, bringing me to a meditative place. I want those who see my work to feel what I do when I create it. Peace. Serenity. Zen. As though for just a moment in your chaotic life, there is nothing to think about but how beautiful and perfect our surroundings are. I want my work to serve as a reminder that sometimes, you have to just be.

I live in Santa Barbara, California but grew up in Hawaii and the beauty that surrounds me is fuel for my creativity. I have a passion for ceramics and sculpture, but also love to paint and make jewelry.
