Announcement   Welcome! This Etsy shop is an extension of my retail pottery shop in Edgefield, SC. Handcrafted functional artisan pottery inspired by nature. Pottery serving bowls, wine glasses, coffee mugs, platters, keepsake ornaments, artisan jewelry and much more.

All functional art pottery is personally signed and dated, and glazed with food-safe glazes and personally made by myself using a blend of stoneware clay. I have a painterly approach to the glazing of the pottery. I create overlap, pour, and splash layers of several glazes creating a truly unique one-of-a-kind functional work of art. My pottery is perfect for the beach house, the country home or city. Entertaining items to enjoy with friends and family.

About

Keeping Centered - Life as a Potter, Artist & Designer

I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Georgia in Interior Design and Fine Arts in 1989, yet at this time I had not discovered my talent for pottery making. After college, I spent my time working as an Interior Designer...with several jobs at high end architectural and design houses. And, I was also volunteering at the High Museum of Art and the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. Art, Design, Preservation all seemed to go hand in hand for me, and considering I have been an artist ever since I can remember it was easy for me to envision having my own business.

Yet, it wasn't until I took my first pottery class around 2002 that I felt like I had discovered my true calling as an artist. After 1 year of paying for studio time, I made an investment into myself and started purchasing my own equipment and set up a small studio while still keeping my "day" job. In 2005, I embarked on a major project of renovating an historic brick storefront circa 1918...gutting it out myself with just my own two hands, a crowbar and a ladder that my brother had hauled over for me. It sat empty for years, and I did all of this while still working at my 40 hr. day job, as well as making a few pots here and there and selling them at local craft fairs.

Then one day, all of a sudden, that day job ended after 6 years, and I took the opportunity to turn my hobby into a full time business. Jane Bess Pottery LLC, opened up November 17, 2006.

There was still saw dust flying in the air because the carpenter was still here putting this old building back together. Luckily, my pottery studio and retail shop were complete. I literally leaped into business. I went from being "unemployed" to "self employed" within 3 days. And, there's been no looking back.

I take great pride with working with my customers to create not just a functional piece of pottery, but one that is truly a work of art to be used on a regular basis and one that will inspire you with living a beautiful life.

Today, I am a thriving artist. A full time professional potter, designer and entrepreneur since 2006 - A successful business owner! I am truly grateful for my customers that believed in me early on and that continue to believe and support my business today. And, I am thankful for my new customers that continue to discover me with the help of Etsy and social media marketing. Please stop by the pottery shop if you're ever in the area. It's always a pleasure to meet you.

Welcome to my ETSY Shop! Jane Bess Pottery is located in historic downtown Edgefield, SC. A town famous for it's "Old Edgefield Pottery." Items you will find in my Etsy shop are of the same quality and detail as you would find in my retail shop. I continue to design, create and make each item produced in my shop. Each item is always signed and dated. And, I always use food-safe glazes on all of my work.

As an American small business owner, all of my supplies are purchased from American owned companies; many of whom are small business owners themselves.

Much of my work is custom order requests. If you see a particular item, but like a different glaze option shown elsewhere in my shop let me know...I will be glad to produce a custom order piece to suit your tastes.

Artist Statement:

Working as a full-time professional potter has created an inner harmony in my life. There is a sense of peace and purpose that extends beyond the walls of my studio. As an artist, I have the unique opportunity of not only producing quality stoneware pottery for people’s homes and daily use, but also I am inspiring young children’s creative spirits, and encouraging others to pursue their own creative passion. I continue to share with others my enthusiasm and knowledge of being both an artist and an entrepreneur. I am often asked, “What is my inspiration,” and the answer is always the same; it is nature, and more specifically water. The sheer natural splendor of the earth itself inspires my creative energy. The way the morning light glistens along the ocean waters, the way the heavenly sunsets drift over a peaceful pasture or freshly cut field; or the way the brilliant blue sky shines down over a field of golden sunflowers. It is the beauty of the American landscape that stimulates my imagination and fuels my creative spirit.
