About

Art in Amazing Places

My art is the unfolding of childhood past-times: spending a lot of time outside, and making things out of left-overs.

My parents instilled in my brothers and me a love and respect for nature. We spent a lot of time exploring the outdoors as a family, and my parents always taught us to be thoughtful about how we used our earth's resources. My Mom was the first upcycler I knew: before recycling was commonplace, she found multiple uses for the plastic containers and bottles that came into our home. She saved scrap paper and cardboard, shoe boxes, magazines, bottles and other odds and ends that we kids could use when we wanted to make stuff. Toys I had from the store or garage sales were always augmented by things I made myself from the stuff my Mom saved from the trash.

Today, my shop is a (somewhat) grown up version of the creation that used to happen around my childhood kitchen table. Only now, I have way cooler tools. Some of my work celebrates the textures, colours, elements and details of nature. And some of my work is upcycled, meaning I try to find interesting and better ways to use things that would otherwise end up in the trash. I love the creative challenge that happens every time I stand beside the garbage can with something in my hand, and say, "What can I make with this?"

Life has so much to delight in - whether it's our glorious earth or the mundane scraps and ends we often leave behind. I hope my work conveys just a bit of that delight.
