The Books That Made You Who You Are

I started the Ideal Bookshelf project in 2007. I paint portraits of people through the spines of their favorite books: the ones that changed your life, that made you who you are, that you read again and again. Seeing someone's favorite stories gives you a very clear window into who they really are.

We are now a small but growing company, and we create prints and notecards of many of the most popular sets of books in various genres. You can even create a set exclusively for your shop, of your favorite books.

In 2012, I worked with writer Thessaly La Force to create a book called My Ideal Bookshelf, published by Little, Brown. It includes the favorite books of over 100 famous creatives from all fields (from writers and chefs to artists, ballet dancers, and musicians), with short essays about their choices and how they became who they are today.

Jane Mount loves books. She was born in Atlanta and formed in Manhattan, and now lives in Kula, Hawaii (or sometimes in Berlin, Germany) with her Swiss husband and two weird cats. We ship almost everything from our location in Houston, Texas.
