Jason Hooper Pottery

My interest in pottery began during family holidays in St.Ives, Cornwall, a historic seaside artist colony. My family is made up of artists and engineers, which reinforced my love for creativity and design. I started my career in science, but swung back to the arts to become a studio potter. I love that pottery allows creative expression and also satisfies my interest in technical challenges like tool making and glaze formulation.

My inspiration comes from abstract and traditional forms, usually with simple lines and geometric influences. Rich glazes and overlapping glaze combinations add flow and depth to the surface and provide variation in color and texture. I create pieces with a white stoneware body, firing to cone 6 in oxidation and applying studio-mixed glazes. All my functional work is food, dishwasher, and microwave safe.

I enjoy the challenge of finding how to best create what I want, and being responsible for all aspects of each piece. I make all my own glazes and custom extrusions, and do hand building, wheel throwing and slab work. More recently I've been experimenting with slip trailing as raised decoration brings another dimension to my glaze finishes. This allows me to create unique pieces.

I am a member of the Greater Austin Clay Association, and help with organizing events and demonstrations for local enthusiasts. The clay community is incredibly supportive and fun, and I continue to learn from and share techniques, tips, and ideas with others who love clay as I do.

Frequently asked questions

Gift wrapping and packaging

If your purchase is a gift to be shipped directly to the recipient, I will gladly include a gift card in the shipping box. If you want me to include a short written message to the recipient, write it in the section "Notes to Seller" as you checkout.

For US orders flagged as gifts, I will not include a printed invoice in the package. International orders legally require an invoice to be included and the customs form for the package will also be marked as commercial, not as a gift.

Packaging & Refunds

I package everything with utmost care. Your piece should arrive in perfect condition or it will be rectified through refund or replacement. If you have any problem with your shipment when it arrives, please contact me as soon as you can and keep the box and all packaging contents for insurance verification.

You can return your purchase for a refund (less shipping) within 14 days if it is not what you want. You are responsible for the return shipping costs. Please use the similar packing materials and consider insurance. I will issue the refund once the returned item(s) have been received by me in good condition.

Computer monitors colors are variable. If you need an EXACT color match, online shopping might not satisfy.

I throw every piece by hand on a potter's wheel and/or use my own custom made extrusions. Most of my pieces use overlapping glazes that I make myself. When they melt and flow in the firing, the results are unique. I aim to achieve a high degree of consistency in size, shape and glaze color but no two will be exactly alike. The item you order will be as close to the photos as possible but please allow for artistic variances. If this is a concern for you, please contact me and I can send you photos via email of the exact piece(s) I will be shipping.

Environmental concerns

It takes lots of energy to make pottery so I fire my kiln with the help of renewable energy generated by my own solar panels. I also load the kiln with items of mixed sizes to make the best use of the space available. All excess clay from production is reworked to eliminate any waste.

As a small business owner, feedback is important and I would encourage you to message or call me with any concerns or problems regarding your order before leaving feedback so we can resolve the situation ASAP. I want you to be happy with your new pottery and make shopping with me a positive experience.

Customs and import taxes

International buyers are responsible for any customs, import, and local sales taxes that may apply. I'm not responsible for delays due to customs. VAT, for example, is not included in my listing price and may be charged to the buyer on delivery.

Missing or stolen items

If your package is shown as "Delivered" and you have not received it please contact me ASAP. I will give you the info needed to research your package through USPS. Packages are found in most instances.

Package theft or loss after delivery is not covered by USPS Priority Mail shipping insurance, so I will do my very best to help with finding your package but will not replace it at my expense if not found.
