About

Simple. Beautiful. Useful.

I love useful objects. Maybe it's that whole human thing of using tools. Whether it's a cast iron skillet, a pepper mill, or a safety razor, there's just something so satisfying about a well-made object that you can use every day and pass on to your relatives. I feel that however well-intentioned the idea of recycling is, it's popularity, in a way encourages a throw away attitude among consumers. Why not purchase something you can reuse instead of discard? If well made, the object pays for itself 100 times over. I think some people get put off by the high price of a well-made object, not realizing that the initial investment (and it is an investment) makes better economical sense than having to replace a poorly-made object over and over again. My goal, in a very small way is to encourage consumers to consider buying items that they will keep and use for a very long time.

I've been working with clay ever since I stumbled into the ceramics studio at the University of the Pacific back in 1995. I'm currently working with porcelain and I use a potter's wheel to make all my pieces. First they are thrown, then trimmed. After they are completely dry, I fire them in an electric kiln. After this first firing the pieces are ready to be glazed. After glazing, the work goes back in the kiln and is fired to a higher temperature which melts the glaze and matures the clay body. Now it is ready for you to use and enjoy!

I have two lines of work. SYRK Tableware is my production line and is comprised of cups, bowls, and serving pieces that I make in multiples. I also make one-of-a-kind pieces that are signed J/R, for Jason Russell. Please be sure to check out both shops for a variety of pieces, including discounted seconds.

Welcome! I hope you find something you like in my shop. All my ceramics are made by me on a potters wheel and fired in an electric kiln. I am currently using porcelain clay which I buy from Seattle. Any unfired clay scraps are recycled and reprocessed into usable clay. I enjoy a very minimal, spartan, clean look which I hope to communicate through my work. Influences come from Scandinavia, Japan, architecture, artists such as Barnett Newman, Richard Serra, Berndt Friberg, and Gertrude and Otto Natzler.
