Announcement   Each year 10 million pounds of clothing is sent to the landfill. We have a better idea! All of our hats are made from "upcycled" and "preloved" sweaters, skirts, coats and t-shirts. We are taking what is no longer desirable or fashionable, and breathing new life into your preloved, discarded garments and giving them a new, more fun life! This will be your new treasure - you will not believe the compliments you will receive! Most of our happy customers return again and again to buy new hats for themselves or gifts. We love making you happy!

Our clothing is made in a smoke free but pet friendly environment. I try to make sure the errant hair does not find it's way to your home, but there is no way that I can guarantee that!

Our most popular hat size is medium large - this fits average adults heads about 22 inches. Depending on the stretch of the fabric, many will stretch to 24 inches. These will be labeled medium - large. The smaller hats are generally 20 - 22 inches for a small adult or large child. We use stretchy fabric around the band of the hat, so each hat has about 2 - 4 inches of built in stretch. To find you size, take a tape measure around and above your ears. You should have a measurement between 19 - 24 inches. If you don't have a tape measure, use a string and then measure it against a ruler. If you would like a specific size, please inquire about it. I am happy to make custom orders. I can be reached at (406) 546-8011.

People who are going through chemotherapy find our hats are perfect for their needs. Soft enough to sleep in, and just the right coverage and warmth.

Moms love them for their babies, since they are soft and stretchy, they are rarely pulled off. They are wonderful for photographer's props as well!

One of my favorite hats to make I call "WARM MEMORIES". These are custom hats made from yours or a loved one's special sweater or other clothing. Simply convo me about this, I will make a special listing for you. Purchase it, and send me your sweater or shirt, plus head measurement and I will make a hat especially for you. If you want to use these as family gifts - i.e. grandpa's sweater made into hats for the granddaughters, remember that I can make 3-4 hats from one sweater depending on the size. I should be able to mail it within a week of receiving the item, depending on if it is my busy season or not. Our peak season is from September until Christmas - it will take a few weeks during this time, as I will also be attending many holiday shows.

Another new line is Team colors. I can custom make you a hat with your school colors and logo if you e-mail me the logo. I can either use one of your team or school t-shirts and make it from this or find similar colors to work with.

About

Jax Hats is saving the world from ugly sweaters and building a family business.

I started my shop in 2007 after I won a local design competition based on the popular TV show Project Runway and started my line of clothing called Jax. I made the first Jax Hat from a shrunken sweater headed for Goodwill for my daughter who is still my main model for the hats. She loved it as did her friends, so I started to take requests and before long I had a following for my upcycled hats. After a few years of selling at local craft fairs and summer markets, this was turning into much more than a hobby. My husband was laid off his job the next year, so I taught him how to sew while he waited for work. I continued to work full time outside my home for several more years, but 4 years ago was able to quit my day job and devote all of my time to growing this business. Paul never has returned to work and finds that he loves sewing and designing the hats as much as I do!
Our business continues to grow, as we are reaching into new markets outside of Montana. My two daughters have also started their own "franchises" of Jax Hats in Bend, OR and Portland, OR making and selling the hats there. This is a true family business, as it supports our 3 families with this labor of love.
Each of our hats is made by one of us, not farmed out to a sweatshop off shores. We use all recycled fabrics, combing the thrift stores for wonderful colors and textures. Then we bring home our treasures, wash and sort them. Next, we spend many days cutting the clothing into pieces and "kitting" them up to sew. We use sergers to sew the pieces so they don't fray and pull apart. This is an important step, as I see some of the first hats that I made 9 years ago still being worn and looking great! The buttons are a labor of love - we spend many days making batches from polymer clay. After the hats are sewn, we audition the buttons so the perfect match is found. And finally, each hat is hand embroidered with JAX in a contrasting color. This is my brand and easily recognizable from any other!

This is an actual feedback posted recently after happy buy received her hat! "Oh my goodness - even more amazing than I was expecting! I think this may be my new favorite hat. Fits perfectly, very well made, very flattering design. And talk about a cute logo! I am normally not into logos, but the JAX feels right!"
