About

My Very Trashy Beginning

In the fall of 2009, I started collaging one-of-a-kind postcards using nothing but my everyday garbage. The postcards were interesting; lumpy and reeking of glue. How surprised were my friends when they started receiving my repurposed junk mail! They didn’t know what to think of it. Neither did I.

Some of the garbage I use is new (a.k.a not gross). Some of it is old (a.k.a. kind of gross). I have a large, odd library of materials just waiting to find their second life. I’ve been saving magazine clippings and old t-shirts my whole life. For a long time, I had no idea what was I going to use it for. All I knew was that someone else had worked hard to create something beautiful to share with the world, and it felt strange to toss it out just because its original purpose had been fulfilled.

My roommate is constantly facing an internal debate when she heads to the trash bin. She has two thoughts, “Would Jen want to use this in a new piece?” and “Do I want this to stay in our apartment?” It must be an exceptional piece of trash to pass her test. Thankfully, other’s are starting to think this way, too. Every now and then, I’ll receive a package in the mail containing a piece of garbage a friend thought I’d like. Encouraging others to take a second look before sending fresh items to the landfill has become the practical mission of my little personal project.
