Paper dolls. Reading under the covers. Discovery. Layers. Ragged edges. Paper, scissors, and glue.
I love layering, subtracting, matching ... finding bits of magic in the peeling back of meaning, the juxtaposition of images, the translation of words into image ... or image into text.
A few years ago, a magazine contacted me to commission a collage illustration for an article. After we'd settled the details, I was connected to the graphic design editor. "What program do you use?" she asked.
"Um .... paper, scissors, and glue ..." I answered with a laugh.
Of course, I knew what she meant, and we settled our technological needs soon enough, but that moment crystalized for me what I love about creating collage art from authentic vintage materials: It's tactile and messy and fraught with potential disaster. Will the paper hold up? Will it dissolve in the glue? Will it tear when I draw or paint on it? I never know exactly what the process will bring.
But never fear--no viable books are harmed in my processes. I stick with old, well-loved, discarded and crumbling materials and give them a new home, new life, new friends.
A rebirth of a sorts, I think. A labor of hope.
