About

Create customized, warm, and cozy keepsakes that will be loved and cherished by those who give and receive them.

Why I love to quilt?
As I tell my children at night, “Remember who made the blanket on your bed. When you are sleeping under mommy’s quilt, it is Mommy giving you a hug all night.” I always spend the whole time working on a quilt thinking and praying for the recipient of the quilt. Quilting is a hobby that creates beautiful products from humble pieces of fabric. Watching the quilt come together and seeing how the pieces fit together always brings a smile to my face as I am able to create something that brings that special hug and comfort to others.

How I got started quilting?
When I was pregnant with our oldest son I was looking for nursery items and baby bedding, and wasn’t liking what I was finding. Also, what I was finding I realized that I could make myself. So I created a few quilts, blankets, and nursery accessories for him, and realized I loved creating things with fabric, especially for those I love around me. I had a passion to create handmade gifts for friends and family around me that were filled with love and joy.

How did I get into selling quilts?
While my husband was in dental school, we decided to put my passion and our family needs together and opened an online quilt shop in 2013. Over the next 2 years I was so thankful to be able to stay at home with our children and help provide for our family. Soon the demands of the shop and the children became overwhelming, and we decided at the end of 2014 the best thing was to close the shop. Now that the children are older, we decided to allow my passion and love for quilting be shared with others and reopen my online quilt shop with JDs Custom Quilts.

What is my specific quilting process?
For inspiration for quilts and quilt designs, I love looking through quilt magazines, and books, scrolling through pinterest, and following fabric designers on social media. I am always learning and desiring to grow in my quilting techniques. Once I find a quilt design that meets the needs of the project, I spend time sketching out the quilt design on graph paper working the fabric math and finalizing the quilt design and basic colors (I have always loved to color, and now I get to have the joy of coloring in quilt designs, lots of happiness). Next, I find my way to local quilt shops, or my fabric stash in search for the perfect color and pattern combinations to match the design and purpose for the quilt.

After the perfect fabrics are found, my rotary cutter, rulers, and cutting mat are pulled out, and the fabrics are cut into the pieces needed to create the quilt squares or blocks. With the fabric cut, the blocks can be assembled. This process can change depending on the style of block that is being used. After the blocks are finished, they can be sewn into columns and rows to create the quilt top. The quilt top, batting, and backing are then stretched and basted together to prepare them for the quilting process.

Once the sandwich is together, I decide the best quilt pattern for the quilt (straight-line, in the ditch, all over free motion…). I square up my quilts by running them through my serger which allows the sandwich edges to stay together better during the binding process. After the quilt is completely quilted, I create a binding specific to that quilt, and attach the binding to the quilt. I do completely attach my binding by a machine stitched method.

After the binding is attached, the quilt is completed and ready to be used as you curl up next to the fireplace with a book and a cup of English Breakfast hot tea.

What kinds of quilts have I made?
T-shirt quilts
All sizes, (36x36 snuggle quilts, crib, toddler, twin, full, queen, king size bed quilts, lap, throw quilts)
Memory quilts (Using fabrics, clothing items to repurpose and upcycle into a beautiful, practical quilt).
