*Printmaker*
*Printmaker:
I began studying printmaking as an undergraduate in my home town of San Francisco at San Francisco State University. After taking an introductory course in printmaking, I instantly fell in love with woodblock printmaking. I went on to get my MFA at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. After some time creating large scale woodblock prints, I craved the idea of creating small carved stamps(definitely easier to carve!) that could be printed together to make a one large image.
*How I began to print on reclaimed wood:
I have a friend who is monk and works in the apple orchard at St. John’s University in St. Cloud, MN. Every Fall he brings my family apples from the orchard. A few years ago he brought them in an vintage crate. Once the apples were gone(many pies were made!), I was left with a really cool crate. I decided to use some of my recent print designs to create a decorative box for my living room. I recently switched from carving wood to carving small rubber stamps. I used these carved stamps to hand-stamped the crate. Since I completed the first one, which I use for holding magazines and books that typically accumulate around the house, I have stamped a few more and then began to stamp other pieces of wood. The wood I print on is reclaimed and repurposed wood....it had a life as a dresser, table or desk before it became a printed surface. I love giving the wood a new life as wall art or a functional piece for a home.
*Inspiration:
My work is inspired by nature. I have a studio that overlooks a beautiful park, I spend my summers camping or at a cabin, I spend my winters cross country skiing and ice skating. All these seasonal events inspire my work.
