Announcement   My philosophy for creating jewelry is that each piece should be unique, fun and affordable. Most of my pieces are made from vintage costume jewelry that has been cast aside. I will deconstruct a solitary earring or a broken bracelet and recycle the individual elements into a new piece. I appreciate the style and spirit of vintage costume jewelry and find that it lends itself to updated contemporary jewelry very well. The majority of my work is one of a kind (OOAK), simply because I’ve used a vintage piece for parts that can’t be recreated.

I hope you enjoy browsing through my Etsy shop! Please feel free to visit again. I have many pieces that were created over the summer in preparation for several local arts festivals. I have been photographing them now that the festival season has calmed down and will be getting them listed in the near future.

Everyone is welcome to follow me on Facebook at the Jen Gourley Designs page and on Twitter: http:/twitter.com/jengourley!! I usually post and tweet each new listing.

Thank you for visiting Jen Gourley Designs! Please feel free to convo with any questions. Happy shopping!

About

Junk to Gems

Since I was a child, I've collected bits and pieces that other people considered to be trash. Without even realizing what I was doing, I found myself re-purposing and reusing things in new ways. My creativity was always encouraged by my family and friends although they were probably embarrassed by my dumpster diving and picking up junk from the curbside. While most moms were driving mini-vans and sedans, I needed a pickup to haul my treasures home. My kids would slide down in their seats as far as their seat belts would allow, but they were always excited with the end results!

While I loved to create new items for our home or gifts for my friends, most of my time was consumed with raising my children and working outside of the home. It wasn't until my boys were in their late teens and moving out on their own that I found time (and space) for a small studio.

I began gravitating toward vintage jewelry pieces whenever I was out junking or rummaging through estate sales. They just called out to me. It seemed natural to deconstruct a broken piece and recreate something new. I begin wearing pieces that I had made and received compliments from friends and even strangers. Most people wanted to know where I had purchased it and I was almost too shy to say that I had made it myself. Almost.

Some friends that are very talented, professional artists encouraged me to open an Etsy shop and enter juried art festivals. Not really knowing what I was doing I plunged ahead. When I entered my first festival, I was so worried that I wouldn't get in and at the same time, worried that I would! I found out that I was accepted about thirty days before the event and in a panic tried to figure out a layout and display for my booth. I didn't even own a tent! I went through my "junk" and found my antique spinning wheel, large ornate frames and some old print trays. Viola! Jewelry displays!

Last season was my first for arts festivals and when they begin again this year, one of the ladies at my first booth of the season said, "I'm such a fan of your work! I have several pieces!" And she bought several more. I've never been so flattered. Because my pieces are so unique, we've been in restaurants and other public places and have seen women wearing jewelry that I've created. It's an awesome feeling!

My success with Etsy has been wonderful too. I would never have imagined that I would be sending creative pieces all over the world and enjoying repeat customers!! The Etsy support staff, teams and forums are a great resource for any seller.

But mostly, I am so thankful for the wonderful support of my friends and family. Without them, I would never have even thought to share my jewelry and other creations with the public.

I love finding new uses for old things. Most of my jewelry is created from vintage costume jewelry. This makes the pieces unique and most of my work is one of a kind.
