About

Free hand pyrography by Jes Hooper

Hi and welcome to my etsy shop!

My name is Jes, and I am a freehand pyrography artist based in Brighton, on the south coast of England.

What is pyrography? Pyrography is an art process whereby the surface cells of wood are burned with hot wire to permanently colour the material without the need for toxic paints or varnishes. It is a very eco-friendly art form, which can be mistaken for lazer art- but I as a freehand artist, I burn all my items by hand.

I specialise in pointillism on oak, a very labour intensive art style that involves burning thousands upon thousands of dots which become blurred in the viewer's eye forming detailed images. For my large wall art I am heavily inspired by animal behaviour, which until recently has been my academic and professional background. I am also influenced by nature, folklore, and my own experiences of travelling, and produce many smaller art pieces which incorporate these themes.

I personally select each piece of timber based upon it's grain, shape, and bark. I source wood locally in Sussex, working with local timber mills and tree surgeons to take on surplus pieces that would otherwise go to waste.

Here in my etsy shop you will find many different items made from many different trees, all hand selected, shaped, sanded, burned, and sealed by hand. Each is unique with no two pieces ever being the same...an aspect of my work that I really love. When I'm not scouting the Sussex Downs for materials or working in my studio, you will always find me outside roving around with my old lurcher "Dylan".

I hope you enjoy looking at my items, please see my website for commission examples.
