Mimm's Grand Ideas
To tell the story of jessicasjems is really just to tell a little bit about our family because both my Mom and Dad are a part of our shop as well. Not only do they serve as my adult supervisors, each of them has an active role in making our jewelry. (More on that later.)
I am a teenage student living at home with my parents, my younger brother (not a beader, but a gymnast), Bailey (golden retriever) and Chloe (cavalier King Charles spaniel.) Besides beading, my time is spent like most young people with schoolwork and extracurricular activities, in particular cross country. I do, however, have that fascination with color, interesting shapes, and pretty beads. (Is it in our genes or what?) At any rate this “About” page is for anyone interested in jessicasjems.
So here’s the story…
Mimm’s Grand Idea (or Two Really)
Mimm is a term of endearment that my bro and I tagged Mom with a couple of years ago. So when I say Mimm, you’ll know I’m referring to my Mom and in a most respectful and loving way too. Before I get to her Grand Ideas, let me mention just a couple of important traits of hers. First of all is Mimm’s eye for color. I believe that some people are just blessed to have it, but most of us don’t...even though we know what color combinations we like. I’m hoping that I’ve inherited at least a part of that gene. She can just look at a tray or two or three of loose beads, start moving them around a bit, and voilà…this amazing, eye-catching piece suddenly takes shape right before your eyes. So knowing that Mimm has this gift for seeing colors and putting them together is a cornerstone of jessicasjems. Dad…uh, not so much.
The other important trait that I wanted to mention is Mimm’s love of jewelry. Lots of Etsians are in that camp, I know, but it was her love of jewelry (no, her intense love of jewelry) that prompted her to hold what would become a life-changing conversation with my Dad one day. I wasn’t there to hear what was said, but I’m guessing that she persuasively suggested to him that it would be wonderful and please her very much if only he would sign up for a beadmaking class.
You can see the thought process here. If Dad could be successful in “hooking together” the pretty beads that she so much adored, a whole new world would be opened for us! She knew from his woodworking hobby that he was more than just “OK” with his hands. And he had another quality that would prove to be extremely useful for a beader…patience. Now my Dad would go to the end of this earth for my Mom, so for him to sign up for Beadmaking 101 was a no-brainer. Grand Idea #1 was in place!
The next part of the story developed over several months as Mimm started getting compliments on all of her handmade jewelry especially those Swarovski crystals that she was wearing. “Will you make one like that for me?” “Do you have your own website?” "How much is that one?" These were questions we began hearing more and more frequently, and it didn’t take long before Mimm, again using persuasive suggestions, subtly told Dad that we needed to start selling our jewelry on the Internet. Grand Idea #2 was born.
And now for a Dad trait. The man is a deliberate thinker, a processor, known for doing his homework. Well, sometimes that fascination with due diligence can result in the dreaded demon of analysis paralysis. Maybe that’s what happened or maybe he just got busy with other projects. At any rate, he read everything he could find about selling on the Internet as his research dragged on and on. Eventually he discovered Etsy and began his dutiful study of how to open an Etsy shop. Jessicasjems was born. Fall and winter and early spring came and went before any actual items finally became listings in March 2012. Hooray! We’re live at last! (Never mind the less than striking photographs as we launched our wares.)
A Family Affair
A unique factor about jessicasjems is the involvement of my Mom and Dad because of my age. Mom is definitely the Master Designer giving her best effort to mentor me while Dad serves as the technician. He fastens the clasps on the jewelry for us. This division of labor works well for the family unit because Mom and I can concentrate on being creative and focus on what Dad calls synthesis…some fancy word for putting beads together, I guess.
Last year, we introduced his wooden keepsake boxes, and they became an immediate hit with shoppers. Look for more items like these popular little storage units to be released soon.
