I’m a writer and photographer whose work explores our relationship as humans with the natural world. My photography, in particular, celebrates the beauty of the North American landscape, including our public lands, rural landscapes, rivers, seashores, and other scenic and environmentally and culturally significant areas. I’m the author of eight books, including the creative-nonfiction titles Red Dirt Country, Pecan America, and a forthcoming title, Landscaping for Wildlife: Essays On Our Changing Planet. My stories and essays appear in American Forests, Big Sky Journal, Catamaran Literary Reader, Gastronomica, Southwest Review, The Atlantic, The Saturday Evening Post, and have been cited in The Best American Essays and The Best American Sports Writing. My photography clients include the Dallas Morning News, University of Kansas, US News & World Report, Oklahoma Today, Miles Media, Oklahoma Department of Travel and Tourism, and WW Norton & Company.
I serve as the resident photographer for Southern Plains Productions, the Oklahoma City theatre company championing early-career artists and accessibility in the performing arts.
I’ve had a lifelong passion for nature and the outdoors. This stems from a childhood spent exploring the fields and streams of the southern Great Plains, in Oklahoma, where I grew up. These experiences heavily influenced my decision to pursue a creative career specializing in nature and conservation issues, and celebrating the beauty of our public lands, seascapes, and other wild and scenic places. While I’ve lived on both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, in southern California and North Carolina, respectively, and though I’ve photographed from Italy to Cuba to Vancouver Island, and from the Sonoran Desert to northern Michigan, I remain most impressed with and fascinated by those vast, open grasslands of America’s southern Great Plains in Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
I’m excited to share my work with you. In browsing my collection of nature and environmental wall art, I hope you find something you like. If you’re looking for something specific that you don’t see, please feel free to message me. I may have it in my inventory. And I’ll be adding to my shop as I continue to travel and find new places to photograph and explore.
