Welcome to my shop!
I make functional pottery for treasured every-day use. Clean lines, understated glaze colors and Japanese-inspired stamp designs distinguish my work. All of my pieces fired to Cone 5 for high durability and are dishwasher-safe, microwave-safe and lead-free, ready for your everyday use. Find my work locally in Davis at Cloud Forest Cafe, Davis Food Coop, Three Ladies' Cafe, Pence Gallery, and Redwood Barn Nursery.
Click on Adaptive Pottery and you will see my latest collection of work, which takes into account the eating and drinking challenges faced by those with hand dexterity issues. For the full story on how my adaptive pottery came to be, check out the Adaptive Pottery page on my Jill Van Zanten Pottery website, at https://jillvanzanten.com/adaptive-pottery/ or read a local newspaper article about the project at http://www.davisenterprise.com/arts/accessible-ceramics-artistic-and-useful-to-all/
Natural variation in handmade work:
Please be aware that my pieces vary in size, shape and glaze application. Therefore, no two pots are exactly alike. If you are looking for exact uniformity, factory-made pottery will be a better bet for you. However, if you enjoy the inherent variability in handcrafted work, and like using pots that show the fingermarks and the heart of a human maker, I think you will enjoy my pottery.
My process:
To see my pottery making process up close, watch a 2 minute clip of me demonstrating how to make a wheel-thrown cup at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIaasTiEzOg (yes, it really is as fun as it looks).

Shipping:
I can usually ship within one to three days of receiving an order. Pottery is heavy and requires extensive cushioning, so shipping is not cheap! My shipping charges are based on averaged Priority Mail costs to mail my ceramics across the U.S. For a single mug, that currently comes to around $12.40. If you are on or near the West Coast your shipping will be cheaper, and I will refund shipping overages of $2.50 or more.
You will receive tracking number and $100 insurance. I pack items with great care but in the event that breakage happens in transit, please photograph the broken item and packaging and send the photo to me within two days so that I can file a claim. You must keep the broken item and all the packing material and box until the claim is settled since you may need to show these to USPS.
Local folks save shipping:
If you live in the Davis/Sacramento area, you are welcome to come by and pick up your purchases and save your shipping fees. You are automatically charged for shipping as you go through check-out, but I will refund your shipping fees through your Etsy account.
Sales tax:
If you live in a state that has sales tax, Etsy will calculate it for you and add it to your order.
Discounts:
I am a small-batch operation and hand-throw, glaze and fire all of my pieces by myself, so my costs do not go down even when I make multiples of an item. (This is in contrast to factory-made ceramics, which often use overseas production and in which there is an economy of scale.) Therefore, I cannot take wholesale orders or offer reduced prices. If you happen to live in the Sacramento Valley area, you can find my work locally; see my website for locations at www.jillvanzanten.com.
Feedback:
I appreciate your feedback! You have 100 days from the date of purchase/shipping to leave a review for me. You will need to sign in to your account and then click on Purchases and Reviews. 5 out of 5 starsThis piece is so beautiful. The pictures don't do it justice. The glaze is gorgeous, it's the perfect size and shape, and I love the pattern detail on the bottom.

5 out of 5 starsAwesome comfort handle mug! I really like this artists style. She creates one of a kind functional art, which is the best kind in my opinion. Keep up the good work! I will definitely buy more in the future!

5 out of 5 starsThe quality of the mug is perfect. The mug does match the description and it is beyond great expectations. I ordered one of these mugs about 2 years ago and I really love it. Thank you.

5 out of 5 starsThe seller was very responsive to my request! I wanted a very large mug, and I was told to wait and place my order in a week, because a new batch of mugs would be available then. When the mug arrived, it was exactly as described. Very high quality, lovely to hold, and perfect for my tea.

I wrap each piece well, using recycled packing materials (which I hope you will again recycle or reuse). In the unlikely event that breakage occurs during shipping, please send me a photo of the packaging and breakage within two days so that I can file a claim with USPS.
If you live in my area and prefer to pick up your purchase, please let me know and I will refund your shipping charges.
