Fun in the Mud

I’ve loved all forms of art since I was a child, but I’ve always had a special love for clay. In fact, I’m sure I have the makers of Play-doh to thank for my present day obsession with ceramics. I loved how it felt, looked, even smelled. As an adult, I still appreciate that pottery is a playful art. There’s something about working with mud (and often being covered in it) that encourages me not to take myself too seriously. As a clinical psychologist, I love the lighter side of life that working at the wheel brings out in me. And, as a mom of two young boys, I understand the glee of being elbow deep in wet, sticky dirt.

I love how the process of making ceramics, from beginning to end, is so interactive and full of surprises. The clay often has its own ideas as to where and how it wants to go. So, I find I have to develop a cooperative relationship with it to succeed. And, of course, the glazing and firing brings other forces that shape the piece, leading to an outcome so unique I had only a part in its creation. Even after all this time, I still find it all rather mysterious.

I pursue this passion of mine in my little backyard studio converted from an old 1910 garage. My dog, Charlie, often hangs out with me, as I spin away on my wheel. If I’m not there, I’m at the nearby ceramics studio where I enjoy learning, collaborating, and being encouraged by other fellow potters. I’m humbled (and frankly sometimes down right astonished) when someone admires my work. I hope that it brings a bit of joy into your life as it has so abundantly in mine.
