About

A Happy Accident

After 4 years of frustrating creative block, I began making chain maille in April 2011. It was something that I'd thought about while working on an assignment for my degree but, for some unknown reason, I just couldn't get the hang of it so I moved onto other jewellery making techniques. After graduation, I had a creative block and after so long of having no creative inspiration, I decided to give chain maille another try. I started using simple coated copper rings to learn basic weaves before moving onto other materials and more complex weaves. I then went on to using silver plated, copper, gunmetal coated and brass coloured rings to create simple pieces of jewellery which incorporated various types of beads.

I gave a few pieces of this jewellery to friends and family as gifts and they loved them. This encouraged me to put my work out to a larger audience. I set up a Facebook page and found that through sharing the link, more and more people were liking what I did and this spurred me on even more. I was getting messages asking how people could purchase my pieces and if I did custom orders. As a result, I set up my Etsy shop in April 2012.

These days, I mainly work with coated copper, silver plated or brass rings and use co-ordinated findings, although I do also like to work in sterling silver and will work in this material for commissions only due to the rising cost of sterling silver. I like to add colour and sparkle to my pieces using various kinds of beads. My particular favourite are Fire Polished glass beads which add bold colour and a hint of sparkle. I also add Swarovski Crystal if I feel that the piece requires that bit of extra sparkliness. If a request is made for a particular colour of bead, I will try my best to source the right shade if I don't already have them in my stash already.

In 2013, I decided to take things a step further and taught myself how to do Scale Maille. I love the texture that is created with basic scale maille and the simplicity of the scale maille flowers, which I add to my pieces or use for simple brooches and hair accessories. I like to use Anodised Aluminium for these pieces because of the colours that the scales are available in. If I want to add a bit of extra depth to a piece, I like to use Titanium scales. I like the depth and variety of colour that they add as no two scales are the ever the same.

Thank you for reading and I hope you like what I create. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.....I don't bite!
