About the Artist:
Raised on a coastal NJ farm, John developed very unique visual perspectives of animals and wildlife. An avid outdoors-man, photographer, and illustrator, John observed and noted animal’s distinct personalities, expressions, and interactions.

While gaining a pre-computer age bachelor’s degree in Advertising and Graphic Design at the University Of Maryland in College Park, John was continually challenged to solve visual communication projects using a wide range of artistic crafts to inspire emotional responses with long-term impact. During that time, John became very skilled with ceramics, illustration, color theory, 2 and 3-dimensional design, textiles, multimedia, abstract woodworking and clay sculpture.

In 2000, after many years of corporate work in marketing and advertising, John started experimenting with acrylics and developed a unique approach regarding animal portraits and color use that brought an even greater impact to his illustrations.

John’s deep understanding of visual communication, color theory, and interpretive design accelerated his artistic craft into acrylic fine art. He eventually latticed all of his design and communication skills with his passion for whimsy, animals, and an appetite for vibrant colors.

In 2008, John began selling his work to the public. In addition to his canvas work, John has also gained notoriety for his collaborative murals in parks, schools, businesses, and private uses.

John Donato has a very distinctive and recognizable style, which is often described as having point-blank" smile impact”. His bold use of complimentary pigments, and whimsical portrait-like concepts stop you in your tracks, and then lure you into the story of the animals.

John’s independent development of his own artistic processes, tools, and creative sequences into proprietary painting methods is also part of why his style is so recognizable and hard to deconstruct.
