Welcome to JoyandWhimsy where I sell art, but mostly books, and you'd be surprised all the time & effort it takes to post them for sale.
First, I put a lot of gas $$$$ and Hours of Time into going to estate sales and far, out-of-the way places to find some rare volumes.
Then I come home, view the condition, and create a write-up - this usually takes me 30 minutes believe it or not for I write & re-write to get it down accurately. I also often have to research the book - the author, the history of it, and often even taking the time to list its contents.
Next I photograph it, uploading the shots to my computer, then uploading all the text & images onto etsy! - It's about a 40 minutes work in that itself.
When books sell - it often takes me as long to wrap them - about another 40 minutes on average (cross-referencing paypal/etsy addresses, finding a box, taping, writing etc) not counting the time to stand on line at the post office - I live in a highly & densely populated area where the wait time at the post is often 20 minutes in itself due to long lines of people.
With all the time I put into listing just 1 book, I'm not really making all the $$$ people think I am. It very much is a labor of love

Accepted payment methods

  • Pay with Visa
  • Pay with Master Card
  • Pay with American Express
  • Pay with Discover
  • Pay with PayPal
Payment
I usually ship upon payment unless there is an issue such as the issues mentioned below...

Currently most business is done through PAYPAL: Please pay for your order immediately (through PayPal) since I cannot ship your order until payment has cleared.
If your payment is not received within 24 hours of placing the order, I reserve the right to cancel the transaction and relist the item.
I currently do not accept deposits to hold items.

For overseas and international buyers living outside of the USA, due to Paypal's new seller protection rules, in certain cases I may require an international customer’s payment of postal confirmation delivery that is usually around $10 extra. However, if an international buyer is in good standing with a lot of excellent, positive feedback, I most likely may disregard this rule. But for buyers new to etsy with zero feedback, I may require they pay for international postal delivery confirmation due to the new Paypal seller protection rules.

Money Orders:
In rare cases I the seller accepts money orders if customer has what I would decide to be feedback in good standing. Only accepting a genuine US Post Office money order. You would need to cart the item first, but don't go through the paypal steps.
Once it is carted, you will get my name & address. I ask that the money order be mailed out within 2 days of carting the item.
The money order amount should be the exact amount due that would include shipping etsy's invoice may show this full amount.
If the money order isn't received 5 days after the item is carted, the sale will be canceled.

Note Only for Customers Who Want Packages To Ship To Addresses Not Registered With Paypal: Due to Paypal’s new seller protection rules, this shop only mails out to addresses on Paypal receipts so if you need this item sent to a different address than the one you have registered with Paypal, then please enter the other address /shipping instructions when purchasing – Paypal gives you a place to type it. If you do not know how to do this please call up Paypal BEFORE buying. If a buyer does not do this, yet still asks for the package to go to a different address, JoyandWhimsy will refund, giving the seller the opportunity to re-type, however, that will mean JoyandWhimsy will have had to pay a transaction and refund fee to Paypal for nothing, so please do it right the first time-thanks.
Shipping
For all buyers within the USA and outside of the USA: if you want an item to go to an address not registered with paypal, you must put that other address on the Paypal receipt when purchasing – Paypal allows you to type in special shipping instructions during checkout. Please contact Paypal before you purchase if you’re not sure how to do that so they help you through the purchase. Otherwise, I might have to reimburse the buyer and possibly allow them to do it over where I the seller will get fees by Paypal for this process.

Unless postings specify Priority, packages will be sent Parcel Post or Media Mail unless I'm informed otherwise. If shipping is changed from Priority to Media / Parcel Post, and a 2nd item is purhcased, a secondary ship charge may be inserted to cover price. I am willing to do overnight shipping if it is possible for me to do -- but note the US Post doesn't do overnight for all parts of the USA, especially in hard-to-reach, very out-of-the way places.
Thanks!

Please understand that it's very difficult being an online seller because often when my items are priced by the postal clerks, those prices may end up being more than originally quoted. For example, after selling an item and wrapping it up -with foam, bubblewrap and tape - it's ofen a few dollars more than what the postal clerk originally said it would be, and that difference comes out of my wallet.
Sometime customers will email me, "why is the ship price almost the same if not more than the cost of the item?"
Just because the post office may have a high price on a heavy/big item, I do not want to raise my prices so they are even more than the ship price. In other words, why should I raise the price of a $10 item just because its shipping may cost $8? I myself have bought items that were around $5 for example with $4 shipping - and that is over 1/2, almost as much as the item.

I usually ship upon payment and take very special care in making sure your items are securely packaged to intend safe delivery. If you do not receive your item within 2 weeks (U.S.) please contact me in writing via email.
"Shipping" entails the price of the postage itself in conjunction with the price of the packaging and transport, and usually, often, Confirmation Delivery or another form of tracking (that is around 80 cents to $2). It usually takes me a half hour and sometimes even a whole hour to package and I do not charge for that time. My charges come from things like packing tape that I use A LOT of and it costs around $6-7 a roll, and I often use up that one $6 tape roll after just 5-6 packages. Therefore it can cost me .75 cents to 1.00 in just tape.
Other items, if not recycled, that I may buy or if not buy take out lots of time to get from local shop owners willing to give it away is bubble wrap (esp for glassware), boxes, and mailing items. Depending on gas prices its .25 cents or more for gas since I don't live near a post office.
At customer request, I often price an item -- I live in the most populated little state in the most crowded place in the world where waiting on a post office line is often 20 minutes (yes 20 minutes is the average) and that in conjunction with driving back & forth comes out to a half hour.
The only time my shipping may be more of an expense is if I need to use registered mail (on say a rare item). Registered mail in the US costs only about $3. For Canada it's about $10.
For Americans in the US, I ship via the US Post office, and if I'm shipping books, unless asked otherwise, titles are sent as US Post Office Media Mail because it's then half the price for you! Book/media mail may take a few days extra -- about a 4-7, depending where in the USA you live, but it's worth it.
For other items other than books, I might ship US Postal Service-PARCEL POST -- because it's more economical. Parcel Post may take anywhere from 2-7 days, depending on how far away you livel so if you need Priority instead, please state at time of purchase.
Certain items, like photos, are shipped internationally, via the US Post Office Air Mail.
So these may be just some of the expenses involved in shipping which is why I keep it Cheap For You by shipping via Media Mail & Parcel POst.

Lastly, I do not ship to all countries if their customs do not accept the item. If a country's postal system is extremely slow, I will not ship to that country either. Such countries may include Russia, Eastern Europe, etc. If a person from these lands purchases from this shop he/she shall be reimbursed.
Refunds and Exchanges
Currently, all or most Sales are final (go by listing for each item) and I do not do exchanges. If a buyer uses an echeck, and wishes to cancel a sale before the package ships, it is the buyer's responsibility to stop the payment in order to avoid losing paypal related fees.

Most Sales are final and I do not do exchanges.
However, for some Americans within the USA, I might reimburse back the money if the item hasn't been sent yet; Or if the item has been mailed out, and the customer writes me and we both agree on returning it, then I the seller am open to customer returning item if it's been mailed back within 7 days after customer receiving it.
Customer would need to mail it back asap, within 7 days with postal tracking.
If the item came with store tags attached to it, as mentioned in listing, those store tags should still be attached. This is important since "Like New With Tags" vintage merchandise often is more valuable to consumers, and therefore sells for more.

After receiving back the item, I the seller may reimburse minus the mail costs already paid out, and the fee money Paypal takes. Paypal may impose fees upon the sale, and even if they give some back upon a return, they then charge a refund fee. If the item was mailed out by this shop, then Conservation Clothing also does not refund for the money already spent towards ship-to costs for mailing to customer.

Note often this store's Ship-To price is projected because the post office cost varies based on weight & distance, and can go up any time. If customer’s distance is farther to mail back to I the seller it may be a few more dollars more for buyer to mail than what I the seller have listed as a shipping price.

A returned item must be returned in protective packaging so item doesn't get wet / ruined. It must be returned to address of this seller, Conservation Clothing, at address provided by this seller. Buyer must keep the Postal receipt that has the tracking number when returning an item. If Post Office is not used, buyer must save whatever track number shipper has given for the item and if seller does not receive package, buyer should be able to provide that track number.

All very complicated which is why we sellers do "final sales" to make it easier on both buyer and seller.
Additional policies and FAQs
BUYER FEEDBACK: If a buyer's feedback has more than 5 negative ratings either from the buyer or seller, I reserve the right to not do business with that individual, and will return all money if it sent to me as a transaction. I say "from the buyer" because with Etsy's current setup there is currently no way to tell if the feedback is from buyer given to sellers, or from the seller doing feedback on the buyer.
RESERVING AN ITEM: If a buyer wants to reserve an item, I am open to that - please contact me, saying how long you wish for it to be held and I may do that depending upon the circumstances.
CARTING AN ITEM: An item is carted when a supposed buyer takes an etsy item so that it is viewed as "Sold" and put in the "Sold" category yet it is not paid for. Carted items should not remain unpaid for no more than 1 week. After 1 week, I the seller have the right to relist the unpaid item.
