This is an amazing piece of functional art. My husband loves it and can't wait to use it to hang his guitar chords :)
A place to discover things with a past
JTBaldwin began with a simple cake pedestal design made from castoffs salvaged from my husband’s vintage audio business. Today, I have a small studio where I’ve developed an eclectic collection that includes an Audio Buffet Line of serveware, as well as a number of products that range from wall hooks made from headphones to tables made from tricycles, drums, and just about whatever speaks to me. Each piece is one-of-a-kind. Each piece is made from authentic vintage items. Each piece is designed as functional art for today's home. The intent of my designs is to connect past and present by uncovering an item with strong lines and just the right amount of wear to verify a history.
It’s truly an organic process that has no preconceived parameters. At the onset of a project I have a vision of the final form, but the details and the exact composition of materials evolve over time. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle. In some instances, I may audition dozens and dozens of combinations until I find one that pleases me and that respects the original structure and integrity. When you’re dealing with salvage, you don’t have the luxury of subcontracting fabrication to your exact measurements. You have to go out and find the fit. It’s just part of the process.
And in the end, it’s about the story, the journey that each piece takes from the manufacturer to the original owner, through my studio and into your home. It’s a piece that played a part in people’s lives. I will always share any information I have gathered. However, in many instances, we can only imagine the road to the present.
If you can find something that speaks to you, that sparks a memory or provokes conversation, that makes you think, recall or wonder, then I have met my goals.
I am very proud that JTBaldwin was included on Apartment Therapy's Best of 2012 List.
