Announcement I am a self-taught mixed media and textile artist on a creative journey to explore a wide range of art styles and mediums. For years, I've dabbled in torn paper collage utilizing torn vintage maps, book pages and ephemera. Working with a variety of mediums is satisfying to me. More recently, I've fallen in love with sewing soft fabric dolls. It makes my heart sing to bring these special characters to life. I'm calling them Jurdie Jean dolls, a nod to my baby brother who couldn't say Julie Jean and said Jurdie Jean instead. It is a nickname that has stuck.

I love my new doll Miles, he is made with superb craftsmanship and exceeded my expectations. Miles's favorite spot to chill is perched on top my jewelry box, next to my bed. So I always see him in the morning as I wake up and when I Go to bed. I literally feel happier whenever I glance at him, he is so darn adorable. I love the detail Julie gave Miles, such as his slightly crooked smile, the tiny rolled up newspapers in his over the shoulder deliver bag, and his cute little cap. I will defiantly purchase a little companion for miles when Julie has made a few more little masterpieces. I love love love him, 50 bucks was a total steal for him.

My little studio is in the sunny breakfast nook of my home. Lots of sunshine and happy art.
All my sewing is done by hand or on my Kenmore -- very few bells and whistles. I like simple!
I like to store my sewing supplies in vintage jars, bowls and baskets. It makes me happy when things are pretty.
I have a theory that you are either fighting back or giving in to old age.Creating art & dolls helps me fight back!!

Jurdie Jean Dolls, A Love Story 50 Years in the Making

My first sewing experience was 4-H when I was 9 years old. My mom was in the hospital and my cousin, Shirley, taught me how to sew my apron for my sewing project. It was an early lesson in humility and "practice makes perfect". I enjoyed making Barbie doll clothes for a few years and I learned to crochet, knit, cross stitch and embroider as a teenager; I've used those skills off and on throughout my life. My baby brother, David, was born when I was thirteen. As a toddler he wasn't able to say my name, Julie Jean, pronouncing it Jurdie Jean instead. I've thought of myself as Jurdie off and on throughout my life and David will still call me that once in a while. It was only natural that I'd choose this fond nickname for the name of my handmade dolls.

As soon as I started sewing fabric dolls again in 2016, my head has been full of ideas, swimming around chasing each other and vying to be the next doll to come to life. I like writing a little story about some of the dolls as I create each one. I like to think that I'm an artist, a dollmaker AND a storyteller all wrapped up in one.

I’ve been creating mixed media art since 2007; it was love at first sight. I’m easily bored and mixed media provides plenty of challenges and opportunities to be creative. I’m constantly noodling new art ideas that I want to create. It’s an ongoing creative journey.
