About

In early 2009, Julie had a problem...

Actually, she had a few of them. First, she was a new mom, working her way through some typical postpartum adjustments: severe exhaustion, a permanent human appendage, perpetual diapering, new decibel levels...none of this is a surprise.

Second, her clothes didn’t fit. Again, not surprising -- except that they didn’t not fit in the usual way: for the last couple of months, her body had been supporting two while eating for none as she struggled to cope with the unexpected loss of her marriage mere weeks after her daughter’s birth.

With said loss had also come problem number three: the loss of half of the family’s household income. Julie knew she was going to have to get creative to both pay the bills and keep herself dressed. A veteran thrift shopper, she knew how to find the good stuff for a song - and since that was still more than she had at her disposal, she took her old clothes to consignment, and scurried off to find some things that would work for her new situation.

Time passed. Julie began to heal (and eat) again - but as she regained some of the lost pounds, she outgrew her new clothing. Same problem, same solution: back to consignment with her recent purchases, and back to the thrift stores for more duds - in yet another size. A funny thing happened, though -- Julie realized that this most recent batch was actually reaping a profit. The wheels started to turn.

Creativity (borne, as it so often is, of necessity) took its course, and Julie’s vintage and fashion recycling business kicked off in early 2010. As it did, Julie’s long-held passion for embracing the character and imperfection of “cool old stuff” took on a life of its own.

Her fascination with treasure hunting, her eye and instinct for what would appeal to and effectively serve the needs of others, her ability to live on a shoestring (with credit to her own mother for early life lessons), and the continuing support of those around her helped her weather the divorce and build a new life - and a new company: Junket: Tossed and Found.

Junket operates a brick & mortar shop in South Minneapolis, an online store @ shopjunket.com, and our Etsy store, to boot.

Junket’s business model is grounded in providing help through goods and service. We:

-help to connect people with the things they need, and make it easier (and fun!) to be ecologically sensitive consumers.
-help high quality, used goods reach people who both appreciate & enjoy them.
-help the environment by reducing waste.*
-by purchasing primarily from non-profit and service organizations and donating excess inventory to other non-profits, Junket also helps these agencies achieve their own social service objectives.

In short, Junket helps. We’d love to know how we can help you, too.

*By gathering items previously headed toward the end of the product life-cycle and deliberately moving them to an earlier stage of that same cycle, Junket’s approach eliminates not only the original waste, but also any costs for the production, distribution, and subsequent disposal of new goods that might have been purchased had the used item not been available. Rinse and repeat - and encourage others to do the same - to help reduce demand for resource-intensive and unnecessary new stuff.
