About KalayaSteede

Creating jewelry and wall art using vitreous enamel.

So what's my story?

It's more of a journey. I wish I had some sort of great adventure to tell you what led to me making art but there is none. Let's just say I fell into art or maybe art fell into me. Nevertheless here's my story...

I am a tinkerer and creator of objects. My affair with metal started after taking my first metalsmith class at Delgado Community College Fine Arts Department here in New Orleans. I think what I really liked was that torch. Something about playing with fire really sparked my interest! After that I believed I found my 'Nietzsche'.

What I really, really enjoy doing is making pieces out of found objects. Currently I am working on recycling and re-purposing found objects using traditional metalsmith techniques. My work includes torch fired enamel, cold connection, and sculptural pieces.

I infuse each one of my pieces with inspiration that comes from deep within - or that comes from outside of me, from nature, people, and spirit.

My studio is in my home (double shotgun) where I play all day.

When I'm not in the studio I am hanging out with my fellow artists, scientists, and misfits of NOLA. I'm surprised I can get anything done!

Muchas gracias for reading and taking a looksy at my shop!

Namaste~

My work is inspired by the land in which I live and the lands of my youth. Symbols and pictoglyps of the southwest or Far East are embedded with artifacts that were found or salvaged in my journeys. My work is infused with nature because it seeks to reveal the beauty that can only come with age. Each piece emerges from my workbench with a sense of mystery, playfulness, or empowerment. All of the work offered here has been hand fabricated in my studio using traditional metalsmith techniques.

If you have any questions about my work, feel free to contact me. Thanks for checking me out.

Namaste,

Kalaya

CARING FOR MIXED METAL JEWELRY
Sterling silver, copper, and brass will oxidize (tarnish or patina) when exposed to air over time. One can slow down this process in several ways. One way is to wear your jewelry often. The natural oils in your skin will help slow down the oxidation. Keeping them in a sealed, zip lock plastic bag will also minimize oxidation. Mixed metal jewelry can be lightly cleaned using a polishing cloth but be careful not to remove the intentional oxidation and avoid the recessed areas.

CARING FOR ENAMEL JEWELRY
Enamels are glass and can crack if dropped. Store in a pouch and away from other jewelry.
