Kalen Roblee is an artist based in Southwest, Nova Scotia. She creates hand-pressed tree ring relief prints using the cross section of a tree to reveal the unique patterns created by the annual growth rings. All wood samples used are sustainably collected from already fallen trees from around the province.
Kalen adds Ink and watercolor illustrations to the tree ring prints to create scenes inspired by the symbiotic relationships and natural structures in nature creating an artistic collaboration between herself and nature.
While no formal artist training, Kalen has been artistically focused her entire life but her education took her down the path of forest and wildlife technology. She holds an advanced diploma in Forestry Fish and Wildlife Technology from the Maritime College of Forest Technology in Fredericton, N.B. Her experiences in the field have greatly inspired her artwork and have given her the opportunity to be immersed in wild spaces across Canada gaining new experiences and perspectives. Her journey as an emerging artist has allowed her to work with local businesses to create designs for interpretive signs, t-shirts and logos, tattoos while creating a body of artwork that inspires others to respect, connect and explore the natural world around them.


Artist statement
Through my artwork, I uncover the stories told within the rings of a tree and use whimsical artwork to illustrate them. The unique shapes and movement of the tree ring patterns ignite my imagination creating a collaboration between nature and myself, while publishing it in the form of artwork. Together we tell tales of creatures big and small, of deep dark forests and stormy seas.
Each story is rooted in science with magical twists and turns to capture the viewers interest and to give them a new perspective while sharing the ancient knowledge of the natural world.
