About

The Incurable Accumulator...

My Mom started taking me to country auction sales when I was about 8. This was back in the 1960's, and the sales were at country farms in Ontario. These beautiful old century homes were usually packed to the rafters with 100 years of possessions. I suppose families did not want to continue farming for various reasons, and the household goods and often the house would be sold by auction.

These sales were simply blissful for me. There were usually a few kittens to play with around the barn, an apple tree or two to climb, and the local Church Ladies would have delicious baked goods for sale. As long as I didn't touch anything, I could wander at will through the tables of antiques and housewares, looking at everything, and trying to figure out what the curious odds and ends were! I saw my first wire bustle, cuspidors, wash stand sets, cream separators, washboards, crocks, and my absolute favorite, humpbacked trunks full of clothing and linens. Oh how I wished I had the $5.00 it would have taken to buy one of those trunks...I I wasn't laughing like the the rest of the crowd when the auctioneer would hold up and black jet beaded mantle, a corset or a christening gown. There was something about those things which really spoke to me.

I still have the beautiful, white painted cast iron bed that Mom bought at one of those sales...for a dollar! Mind you, we had to scrape about 20 coats of paint off of it before it could be repainted, but I love it. And Mom has her huge collection of green Depression glass, as well as many other collections.

Those early sales inspired a permanent love of the hunt, and of learning about antiques and collectibles of all kinds. I try to have a great variety of interesting things for you to peruse. My favorite things to offer are jewelry and accessories, vintage clothing and hats, lovely ephemera, and any other vintage treasure that is beautiful and delightful. I hope my offerings will bring a smile to your face.

I do not have any employees, my business is a one woman affair!

My name is Karen Elmquist, and I am an artisan and vintage dealer living in beautiful Southwestern Ontario, the most southerly part of Canada. I have been attending estate auction sales since I was 8 years old! My special areas of expertise are vintage textiles, clothing, jewelry and ephemera and I love to find unusual and beautiful things to offer my customers. I've been making jewelry for over 35 years and have been making handmade lampwork glass beads since 2002.
