Painting with Wool!
One day I came across felt making by pure accident. While attending a children's art day with my kids, we were shown felt making in such a simple but effective way that we went home and created our own large scale wall hanging for our living room …. and from then on, I was hooked!
Living in Brighton, by the sea was a tremendous influence on my work resulting in powerful, dramatic wave art! I liken the laying down of fibres to painting, as `I step back to view my 'canvas.' Painting with wool.
My inspiration within nature is constantly evolving: from floral corsages and animal nursery art. Now animal headdresses dominate inspired initially by my own fluffy eared canine and meeting all the wonderful dogs on my daily dog walks. This resulted in hand felted varied dog breed inspired hats with their distinctive perky or floppy ears.
Carefully blending different wools and animal fibres, results in highly realistic colours and stunning textures. My dog hats have now evolved into majestic Stag Antler headdresses, curly Aries Ram headwear and Taurus Bull Horns to name a few.
Customers have worn my hats for Burning man, Krampus, Halloween, parties and festivals. My Stag hats and Hares (or Bottom) have appeared in Shakespeare, Opera and theatre. Celebrity Hollywood Tattoo Artist, Kat Von D bought my black cat hat, Singer, Charlotte Church has bought my Stag as have tv producers for The Grand Tour currently airing their first series.
Alongside my Etsy shop, I like to pass on my knowledge of this wonderful, therapeutic art form to others. I regularly attend craft fairs and exhibit in The Brighton Festival. I run workshops in schools creating whole class wall hangings and short 'Introduction to feltmaking' courses. I run hugely popular workshops at large events such as The Brighton Mini Maker Faire, the Brighton Science Festival, many local events and children's parties too. "I love showing people the wet felting process and seeing their fascination as their pile of wool transforms into a felted work of art." The uses of felt are endless, so too is the learning process which makes the nature of felt making so unexpected and so rewarding.
With my work, I have a common theme: I love colour and texture, I blend different wool and animal fibres together resulting in a piece of individual art that is rich in colour and depth. The uses of felt are endless, so too is the learning process which makes the nature of felt making so unexpected and so rewarding.
