About KarinSF

Sales 652
On Etsy since 2009

During the day I'm a clothing designer... at night I like to knit.

From the age of six I had the certainty I would grow up to be an artist, imagining myself as the next Picasso (I was only six years old after all)!

During my first year at a fine art school my Dad remarked one day “I never see you with a sketch book, you’re always making clothes for yourself". Light bulb turns on...
A sidestep to fashion design and pattern making helped develop my true vocation and I never looked back.

I worked briefly in Paris, then London with a renowned British haute couture designer who initiated a passion for lace and silk fabrics. Then a change of pace into high fashion found me employed as a pattern maker, and assistant designer for several companies situated in frenetic central London. It was an exhilarating time in my life (tight deadlines, catwalk shows, long hours, late nights and fashionista drama).

I really wanted more control over the products I had a hand in, particularly to be able to work on a design from concept to finished article. I've also always held dear the maxim of quality over quantity. The idea of working for myself seemed very appealing.

Later, following a spontaneous move to San Francisco I started receiving requests for custom made wedding dresses and each bride referred me to another. Gradually I had sufficient orders to sustain a small business.

Knitting began with a need to add creative relaxation to my somewhat crazy life as a self-employed clothing and wedding gown designer. I joined Etsy when a couple of couture clients saw my first attempts at knitwear design and suggested I open a shop here. If you haven't guessed yet, the SF in KarinSF is for San Francisco, the lovely vibrant city I've adopted as home.

The most exciting aspect of my profession was and remains the pattern making process. Knitting is an extension of that discipline.
Flat drafting for dress patterns is still very rewarding, but turning yarn into something three dimensional really gets me thinking through the entire process to the finished article, and I can get quite obsessed! The goal is always to configure a knitwear design in one piece with no seams at all if possible. It would be an understatement to say I really don't enjoy sewing knitted pieces together 😊.

I'm passionate about creating fabulous designs which are also beautifully made. My standards are very high, and if I wouldn't absolutely love to wear one of my creations I don't offer it for sale.

If you'd like to see me at work and play in San Francisco, and in the studio with my feline companions, you'll find me on Instagram @karin_sf

Thank you for taking time to look through this section.

Every single item is my own original design and pattern, made by me in a smoke free environment in San Francisco.

I use only premium yarns, textiles and trim including vintage fabrics, lace and buttons. I prefer to line items in silk, and employ very high end construction techniques.

Whenever possible, knitted articles are washed upon completion with a very mild organic unscented product, then steamed and re-shaped prior to shipping to ensure they arrive fresh and in pristine condition.

I enjoy and appreciate all custom work, please don't hesitate to ask!

◉ For refunds and exchanges, PLEASE CONTACT ME within 7 days of receipt of article.

◉ Refunds are made provided the returned item is shipped back within 7 days of being received, unworn/unused and in the condition it was originally sent. All domestic returns MUST be sent with a TRACKING NUMBER, preferably using USPS Delivery Confirmation, or if from outside the United States some identification to track the package.
Original shipping costs are not refundable (except in certain particular instances at my discretion) and the buyer is responsible for the return shipping of all items being refunded or exchanged.

◉ I will also accept the return for refund or exchange of unique custom orders if the item fails to meet agreed criteria detailed in the custom listing, or the fit is unacceptable.

In the unlikely event that your package is lost on it's way to you, let me know and I will do my very best to see how I can help with either a refund or a replacement item.
KarinSF accepts Paypal, credit cards through Etsy's direct checkout and Etsy gift cards. All prices are in US Dollars.

◉ Your address on Paypal must match the shipping address provided to Etsy.

◉ California residents: your purchase is subject to an 8.75% sales tax. Tax will be added when proceeding through checkout
◉ THESE ARE THE CURRENT TURNAROUND TIMES FOR ITEMS NOT IN STOCK: hats & scarves 1 TO 2 WEEKS, shrugs & sweater coats 2 TO 3 WEEKS, felt bowls 3 TO 5 DAYS. Items IN STOCK will be shipped within 1 TO 3 working days of purchase.

PLEASE NOTE: lately the United States Postal Service performance has been less than fabulous. Occasionally, I have been finding some parcels taking up to 2 weeks to get across the country. I believe in some cases this is due to the closure of USPS facilities, other instances of delay are simply baffling. Please allow extra time for these unexpected delays. I frequently check tracking of my shipped items and always call USPS customer service if delivery is not on time. If your parcel encounters problems I will be happy to let you know of any updates as I receive them.

Within the US, most lightweight items ship Priority (2-3 day) Mail, heavier ones with First Class Mail. ALL OTHER COUNTRIES: shipping is via USPS International First Class mail.
My felt bowls are packed with tissue in gift boxes then shipped USPS First Class mail in corrugated cardboard boxes made of recycled material. Due to the combined weight of the boxes and bowls, shipping is a little more than I wish I could offer, but the price refects a sturdy package which protects your purchase from being crushed.

◉ CUSTOMERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CUSTOMS DUTIES AND TAXES where international law requires them. I am obliged to indicate the true value of all purchases on the shipping label. Should you decide your country's taxes are more than you are willing to pay, you may cancel your order BEFORE YOU RECEIVE SHIPPING NOTIFICATION which is usually within 24 hours or sooner for items in stock. For made to order knits please cancel within 48 hours.

UK CUSTOMERS, please see this information on import duties and VAT:

For unique custom orders, or articles which are not in stock but currently to order, refer to the shipping date provided in the listing. If you would like a faster turnaround time on any order, please don't hesitate to ask me.

◉ Allow 2 to 7 business days for domestic delivery, and 7 to 14 days for other countries under normal conditions (up to 4 weeks in some cases).
I am finding some parcels sent internationally are getting stuck for prolonged periods in customs. You may need to wait as much as one month in some cases for your item(s) to reach you.

◉ All items shipped to addresses within the US and internationally will have insurance at least equal to the contents of the package and a tracking number, unless otherwise specified in the listing.
Detailed tracking information for international destinations does not extend beyond United States borders but does include delivery confirmation.

Please let me know if you have other requirements (for example Certified mail which requires your signature or Priority shipping etc) so I can give you a suitable rate.

I regret that for the forseeable future, at my discretion, I do not ship to some countries. Included are those in areas of conflict, or any countries embargoed by the United States or United Nations as sanctioned by the Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) or anywhere I deem shipping to be too problematic and unreliable.

The following list is subject to change as this is decison is influenced by US foreign policy and world politics, as well as my own ethics:

Afghanistan, Angola, Bolivia, Burma, China, Congo, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Ivory Coast (Cȏte d'Ivoire), Liberia, Mexico, Nigeria, North Korea, Paraguay, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela.

◉ Transactions from these regions will be cancelled, as will orders paid with Paypal required to ship to international postal box address (with exceptions made to Canada).
