Updates

Look what I found thrifting today! They had this behind the counter because they were going to use it to wrap glass and china! A whole new meaning for "wrap dress," LOL! I managed to snag it and I'm happy to say it's cut and complete. Hooray!

About

Vintage and Out of Print Sewing Patterns by Karl79

I have something of a problem when it comes to collecting vintage ephemera. I have over 2000 scandal, romance and girlie magazines from the '40s, '50s and '60s, which I doubt I will ever part with. But in the past few years, I've rediscovered my love of sewing, which lead me to a new obsession–vintage sewing patterns!

I've sewn quite a few fabulous outfits from vintage patterns. The instructions included with most vintage patterns are clear, direct and easy to understand–which makes sewing a joy, not a chore. I haven't had the same luck with modern patterns, no matter what brand. I suspect that the big pattern publishing companies, in an attempt to cut some corners, have "jobbed out" the crucial task of writing instructions to people who either don't sew, aren't native English speakers–or both. The result is an unhappy and frustrating experience in the sewing room.

Fortunately, I seem to have a knack for finding vintage patterns that will produce garments that will look fabulous today. If you've never tried sewing with a vintage pattern, I highly recommend it. You might just find yourself hooked!

I learned how to sew on my mom's Singer 201 when I was nine. I love vintage sewing patterns for many reasons–a snapshot of the past, the literate and detailed instructions, the quality and wearability of the final product. I hope you love them too!
