Announcement   From the designer who dislikes waste, Katcha Bilek presents her collection of stylish, resilient bags and belts made from reclaimed inner-tubes, bike tyres and car seatbelts.

KB began life in the back of a converted fire engine. This formerly utilitarian vehicle was home to head designer Katcha while she was travelling Portugal in 1998. And in a fire engine, the spark of an idea took flame – if a vehicle destined for the crusher could become a home, then what could a discarded tyre be transformed into?

‘I became so aware of the abandoned materials that were around me and it struck me that, with some imagination, they could be reconstructed into something beautiful and useful.’ – Katcha Bilek

Using traditional Spanish leather-working techniques, Katcha began to transform unwanted inner tubes into beautifully designed bags – and sold them straight from the back of the fire engine.

An intelligent alternative to animal skins & high street copies, the Katcha Bilek line is robust and versatile - perfect for a busy urban lifestyle, compromising neither on style nor ethics.

Holy shit I'm in love with this handbag. It's so unique and I've been getting a lot of compliments on it - it's been a great conversation starter! I only have one complaint about the bag. It seems generally well made, but I'm not impressed with the strap. It looks cool af (it's a tire tread!) but it's already starting to wear off and pill on the edges. It just feels a little unfinished and I'm worried about the strap looking shittier over time and/or just breaking. This item shipped to me super fast!

About

KBs Four Commandments of Style and Substance:

We love re-use:
All our materials are reclaimed from industry- these are items that would otherwise be languishing in landfill. About 50% of our materials come from right here in Bristol, minimising the transport miles it takes to get them to us. The rest are from within the UK.

We love sustainability:
Our products are made mostly by hand, using techniques like riveting. This eliminates the need for stitching with electric tools, or fastening with toxic glues.

We don't sacrifice style:
Informed by each season’s catwalk styles, head designer Katcha brings her own punk aesthetic to the process, creating a visual language that can be heard over the noise of high-street fast fashion, yet is wearable every day. What’s more, the materials themselves, with their inherent variances, ensure that each KB product is different from the last.

We LIVE our beliefs:
Otherwise known as “walking the talk.” KB doesn't just have an ethical policy –sustainability is in our way of life. That's why our headquarters are based in the eco-conscious community that is Bristol’s Hamilton House. That's why we all walk and cycle to work each day. That's why we prepare meals from scratch, campaign against food waste, and make sure lights are switched off at the end of the day!
