Work in progress.

I've had a needle in my hand since I was a toddler. It started with a plastic yarn needle, a length of yarn, and a piece of burlap, which I'd sew little designs into. I progressed to cross stitch, and designed little outfits for my dolls, and then for myself. In high school, knitting with my mother's vintage patterns became more interesting, and I started drawing and painting more, but still preferred more three-dimensional forms of expression.

I placed first in a national embroidery competition, for my original designs, at ages 11 and 12. My first job was at a fabric store, at age 14. I loved rearranging the bolts of fabrics, touching them, and imagining what they would become. I've worked with needle and thread professionally ever since, doing everything from zipper repairs to silk curtains to custom costumes.

Life changed for me in the spring of 2011 when I was diagnosed with late stage Lyme disease. With treatment and health problems, I had to re-evaluate my life, what was important to me, what I was able to do, and what I wanted to do. And so I opened up shop.

It's been slow going - I tend to work meticulously, and these days my energy levels aren't close to what they once were - but I'm getting there. I enjoy designing, and have more ideas than time to execute them. (A good thing - I never have to wonder what to do next, since there's such a back log of ideas!)

My knitting patterns are designed by me, and I do all the grading, calculations, layouts, and charts. Then I test knit them, sometimes several times. After that, they get sent to my trusty tech editor, who makes sure my math is correct and you get the best, most professional pattern possible. I can custom make any of my patterns for you, of course, but being a one-woman operation, this is time consuming and therefore expensive. I decided to offer my patterns to make them more accessible.

I work mainly with flat silk threads, and like combining them with rougher fabrics like wool and cotton twill. I draw my designs on paper, and color them to give a rough template to follow when I start stitching. The designs are then transferred with loose chalk (pounce) and traced with removable fabric inks. Then I stitch. And stitch. And stitch. Sometimes I get blisters and have to take breaks while my hands heal, but I love every minute of it.

I plan on creating some kits in the future, but right now I'm working on some one of a kind pieces. They will be revealed in due time.

Meanwhile, have a look at a jacket I made, so you can see the process. This one was a finalist for the Hand & Lock Prize for embroidery in 2010. It's not for sale, since it fits me too well, and I won't part with it for less than a bazillion dollars. (Pictures of me knitting aren't interesting, believe me, and I'm not showing you my pristine, fancy studio, because like most working/starving artisans, I don't have one. I work in my living room/office/kitchen, and I don't want you to see my dirty dishes.)

I design, embroider, knit, write, edit, photograph, list, email, ship, and promote all of my items out of our tiny apartment in rural Pennsylvania. My cats provide input and constructive criticism.

  • Rupert

I'm Rupert. I like going inside and outside and inside and outside. I'm an avid hunter, and as an amputee I've overcome my disability and learned to thrive without a tail. My job is to make sure nothing gets done until my needs are met.

  • Felix

I'm Felix. I'm 16 and retired, but I help part time with fabric layout, thread tangling, and observing Kate's work closely. VERY CLOSELY. I like naps in laps and saucers of cream.

I've been obsessed with knitting, sewing, and embroidering for as long as I can remember. I love it, and can't imagine doing anything else.

When I was younger, I liked to draw and paint. However, I didn't like that there was little you could do with a painting once it was finished, other than look at it. Somewhere along the way, I decided to use my needle skills to make more functional works of art, and here they are. I try to make my designs classic as well as playful. I think that clothes should be comfortable, fun to wear, and make you feel good.

My items are carefully and lovingly made, with lots of hand finishing and attention to detail. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy making them!

Additional policies and FAQs
With proper care, your hand knit garment will last for years and years. I recommend dry cleaning for all hand knit items. Carefully hand washing of garments can work, but sometimes shrinkage or stretching can occur. You should never, never wash hand knits in a washing machine!

I accept custom orders, terms & payments to be arranged on an individual basis. (Please note that I can not duplicate another designer's work, or create work that includes others' copyrights or trademarks.) I will work closely with you to ensure that you're getting the item you envision. Custom orders are not returnable, and deposits on custom items are non-refundable.
