About KateConaghanDesign

Sales 686
On Etsy since 2015

Hello

Welcome to my Etsy shop. I am just starting out selling my jewellery, but I'm not new to arts and crafts - I have been drawing, making, and sewing for as long as I can remember.

I started out making jewellery and accessories as a child, and carried on - I couldn't ever find jewellery how I dreamed I wanted it, so I made it. It started out just for me, or for gifts, or requests for friends. I never imagined I could take it further. Chance led to me meeting with a talented illustrator and craft curator who asked if she could sell her items in her shop... And so my little dream has got bigger!

I have two big inspirations for my work - 'nature' and 'vintage'.

I grew up in the wilds of Suffolk, with nature on the doorstep, so it's no surprise it's a regular feature in my pieces. I think the natural world is exciting and beautiful, birds, animals, insects, plants and flowers... all of it. Many of my pieces centre around a bird or a beastie, and I love to give them stories. I had more animal friends than human friends as a child, and I guess this has found it's way into my work. I walk the dogs in the countryside every day, and I am forever coming home with feathers, colourful leaves, photos of animal footprints or hideyholes...

As for vintage, well, when I was growing up whenever we popped into town, my mum would always take me for a look round the charity shops, or antique shops (she watched a Lot of Lovejoy). To this day I find it hard to walk past a charity or second hand shop without popping in. I love the items I find because they have stories, maybe reminiscent of the old books I grew up reading, or the mystery and sonder of people I haven't known. I like to collect 'treasure' pieces from vintage jewellery, whether it's vintage glass beads or charms, or intricate metalwork pieces, and I like to incorporate them into pieces where I can. I also like that things are getting a second life - I try to be ecologically conscious in all areas of my life.

As well as a treasure hunter, Mum was a librarian and artist, so we always had tonnes of vintage books, William Morris prints and the like, and art catalogues hanging around. That's all seeped in as inspiration!

I don't have a set process with my work, it depends on what I find. It's quite an organic process - I tend to just pick up pieces and they feel 'right' together. Most of my pieces are one of a kind - partly because I like to create unique jewellery and stories, but also because I may only have one of the piece! The animal characters may reappear, as they are sourced from vintage illustrations and reproduced, but the setting and components are hardly ever the same. (I love to work with people to make custom pieces too).

This all does mean that my workspace is often borderline chaos - did I mention we're also renovating our house? Ha - so you'll notice the absence of workspace photos here. I promise to remedy that soon. If I tidy up. Maybe!

I'm just setting up and finding my way, hopefully I will have a store full of treasure for you soon! I'd love to hear from you, even if you just want to say 'hi'. Hi!

Hello,

Welcome to my shop. I love to make unique wildlife and vintage inspired jewellery and small design items. All items are designed and handmade with love and care.

I use lasercuts of animal illustrations or vintage images, vintage and salvaged/reclaimed components from rescued jewellery from all over, semi-precious stones, vintage cabochons, and other various charms.

Because of how I source materials and put pieces together many items are one of a kind. Animals and illustrations may reappear, but rarely in the same setting! If you missed out on a piece you were especially keen on, do get in touch and I will see what I can do to recreate or work up something similar. I would also be delighted to make a custom piece for you.

I try and take care of the environment every way I can - much of my wood is strictly sustainably and ethically sourced (above and beyond FSC), many of my items are lasercut using renewable energy, my boxes and as much packaging as possible are made with beautiful recycled materials, and all items are fuelled with fairtrade tea :-). Nature and ethics are important!

Returns and exchange details
I try to be as clear and detailed as possible when listing my items - both with descriptions and photographs. Please make sure you read a listing fully, and look at all the pictures. If you do have any queries about an item, please feel free to ask questions, I am very happy to help. If there is something you're not sure of, or you would like amending, such as the length of the chain - get in touch.

The most important thing is that you're happy with your order. If for any reason you're not, please get in touch. Even if you struggle with social anxiety and this kind of thing makes your toes curl with awkwardness (I get you!) please get in touch. I am sure we can work things out.

If the item is faulty or damaged on arrival, please get in touch with me straight away. I will always retain proof of postage so any mailing damage can be claimed for.

If you treat your jewellery with care it should have a long and happy life with you. While all of my items are guaranteed to stand up to normal wear and tear, I am happy to offer a 3 month guarantee on all pieces, against any damage caused by normal everyday wear or any product/fixing defects - this includes fixtures and mechanisms.

I take a lot of care when I am making items, so hopefully this won't be an issue, but sometimes, in the words of Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park: "life finds a way". Please carefully package all the pieces of the item back to me, and I will repair the piece at no extra charge, and post it back to you, at no extra cost. This does not include damage done due to negligence (for example, if a brooch back comes off, of course I will replace it, but if you snap a leg off an animal then this is not covered).

If something happens, you accidentally break a piece, or it's a long while down the line, I am still happy to fix it for you if you post it to me (at your cost) - please message me to arrange.
Payment
I am happy to accept payments via Etsy Checkout, PayPal, (or cash on collection if you are local - please convo me to arrange).

Please try and pay within 2 days of purchase. I will update the item to let you know it has shipped - if for any reason you wish to cancel your order, please let me know ASAP as once I have dispatched the item I can no longer cancel it.

My prices include UK VAT. I don't add any other taxes.

Etsy will email you a receipt and confirmation of your order. To cut back on unnecessary paper, I don't include a duplicate copy of this in with your order - however if you would like me to just add a note at checkout and I'll pop one in.
Shipping
I list standard delivery to the UK, Europe, USA, and most of the rest of the world. If for some reason your location does not appear to be an option please message me and I will get a quote or update the shipping info to make it work.

Standard postage is as listed - either second class UK post, or standard airmail. If you wish to upgrade this to 'first class', 'signed for' or 'trackable', you can add these at checkout (if you have any problems let me know and I will add it for you). I can also ship many items 'unboxed' to help cut back on postage - please send me a message to check this will work for your piece.

I combine postage costs if you would like to buy more than one item - Etsy should do this automatically when you check-out, but if there are any mishaps please let me know.

International buyers please note that buyers are responsible for any and all duties and customs charges that may be incurred. You may incur import taxes if that is the policy of your country - please check if you are unsure. Unfortunately legally I am not allowed to note the item as a gift, provide false information about the cost of the goods or pay import taxes. These taxes do not apply to all countries and are often dependent on the value - usually orders from this shop are not expensive enough to incur charges, but *Please Check* if you are unsure as I am not responsible for this.

I will always retain proof of postage, and if tracking numbers are provided I will pass these on so you can see your package winging its way to you.

I tend to post items on the same day or the day after the orders are placed - I will let you know when the order is dispatched.

As a rough guideline, delivery times from the day after postage are:
UK postage - first class - within 1 or 2 days
UK postage - second class - within 2 to 5 days
Europe - Western Europe - usually around 3 - 5 days
Europe - Eastern Europe - usually around 4 - 8 days
USA and Canada - usually around 7 - 10 days
Rest of the world - usually 10 - 14 days
However all of these times vary with: customs, weather problems, postal strikes and other miscellaneous events.

Once I have posted an item, unfortunately, other than sending good vibes, I do not have any control. If you're wondering how long an item will take, please message me. I can also check for issues such as severe weather incidents etc.

*Gemstones and semi precious stones*
Please note that with semi-precious stones and materials I list them as I have purchased them, or I will give you an estimate of what I believe it to be. If you are keen that a gemstone in a piece is indeed a specific stone, message me and I can let you know how I came to identify it.

Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalised orders

I love creating custom or customised orders wherever possible - drop me a message and we can discuss :-)

Are your materials hypo-allergenic?

I have metal allergies so I 100% know what it's like! As standard, all my metals are lead and nickel free. My earring hooks, metal chains, charms, and findings are brass or alloys, and my 'standard' earring studs are silver plated.

I also have a wealth of super hypoallergenic alternatives- I have niobium and titanium earwires which are incredibly non-reactive, and I have titanium and surgical steel earring studs. I also have a range of other plated chains on offer. Some of these incur a small extra cost due to their costs, but usually this is no more than £1 at the top end.

Feel free to send me a message and we can work something out.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Do I gift wrap? Hell yes. I have lots of lovely tissue paper, washi tapes, and pretty string. Most items come in their own gift boxes too so they make lovely gifts. Just drop me a note at checkout.
